When I turn on my GT, it makes a loud, high beep, help

I was detecting yesterday for about an hour and all was well. I got to one area and all of a sudden my detector let out a very high pitched beep. There was nothing under the coil. I have never heard such a high pitched tone from my detector before. Right after the high beep, it would let out a low groan tone and stay there. After about 15 seconds, I would get the loud high piched tone again, it would go up and down and then back to the low growl. When I would turn the machine off and turn it back on, I would immediately get the high pitched tone again briefly. It did that after turning it off and on several times. Could this just be an indication of a low battery or a problem with the detector? Any feedback would be appreciated. Right now, I plan on charging the battery and seeing if it makes a difference. My GT went a bit wacky this weekend. I was swinging and all of the sudden it sounded like I was over a very large target. No matter where I moved the coil, even up in the air, it had a solid sound. Turning it off did no good. Once I got home I found it was simply the batteries were going dead. The manual said it would give out some short beeps, but I must have missed it.

Try changing the batteries. Worked for me.
 
that sounds like the low battery tone to me, gives it off every 30 seconds or so
 
Good, I was getting worried. I will charge the batteries tomorrow when I get home from work and try it again. The sound was produced about every 30 seconds and upon initial startup. Sounds like low batteries may be the culprit. Thanks, Bryan
 
I have had the same thing happen, eventually when the batteries are really low the Threshhold gives a constant high sound, EVEN IN SILENT SEARCH, Its actually a great alarm to give you a heads up that your batteries are low!

Thanks again for the confirmations of a low battery. I have charged my battery and am about to try it out. I will let you know what happens. Bryan
 
Just to clarify a few points, from the manual:

ONLY use alkaline batteries in the alkaline battery pack, never "standard" batteries and never rechargeable batteries, as they do not have the sufficient voltage output for the Sovereign. Fresh alkaline batteries should power the machine properly for about 10 to 15 hours.

If using the Minelab NiMH battery pack, you need to charge it for 12 - 14 hours to have a full charge and should provide 15 to 20 hours of detecting time.

I guess that means I should re-read my owners manual :) I charged my battery and it does not make the high chirp when I turn it on and I would suppose the next time I go out detecting it will not do the chirps anymore. Thanks alot.
 
Regardless of what the manual says rechargable AA batteries work perfect and with the 2800mah that i use they last longer than the rechatgable pack. The manual was made and printed years ago and is not up to date with todays rechargable battery tech.

I have to agree. I thought my SE wouldn't run with them but I found out other wise. I'm using 2600mAH in my pack for a total voltage of 9.6v. With regular alkaline batteries it's 12v.
 
The explorer runs on 9.6v as far as i know even theough the battery is 12v as it has an internal voltage control. The rechargables i use give a reading of 1.38 -1.4v each when charged (not under load) x8 gives about 11v which is ample.
The sovereign will also run at this voltage although when it gets down to 9.8-10v the battery alarm will sound, using high mah batteries it takes longer for the batteries to go from the 11v to the cutoff voltage, the brand i use are Sanyo and Fujitsu

@king-ghidorah have you measured them with a meter or are you just summing up the 1.2v x 8 = 9.6v as i get between 10.9v - 11.3v

A strange thing though i have some older 1500mah that i no longer use in the detector but they are still fine, i put one in a wall clock and it wouldn't work so i tried one of the newer ones 2800 and that didn't work either.

I am just summing it up. I have no meter. You sound like my ex-Father-n-Law. He is big time into batteries. He even is a frequent poster on the battery forums,heehee. I will say though that there is more to just getting the right sizes, AA or AAA batteries. There is a lot to learn there for sure.

I think it's because of what someone said that the SE has an internal voltage regulator. The SE can run on 1.2 (NiMH) x 8 = 9.6v OR 1.5 (alkaline) x 8 = 12v BUT also the the NiMH actually run when charged at full strength at 1.4v x 8 = 11.2v as someone indicated with a voltage meter on this thread. The Sovereign should be able to run with NiMH batteries just like the SE does. Preferably 2600mAH NiMH batteries and above for maximum times on the GT. Compared to a 1600mAH pack you should get at least 7 more hours out of it.
 
I have had at least 10 hours out of 8 x 2800mah in the sovereign
 
The Sov has a voltage regulator too, but it is set for something like 10-10.5 volts. You can't compare the two different detectors .
 
Like I say the Sovereign is made for 12 volts as this is what the factory pack is, now the factory pack for the Explorer is 9.6 volts as it uses 8 of the 1.2 volts AA batteries while the Sovereign has to have 8 of the 1.2 volts to get the 12 volts needed. Many have tried to use the 8 1.2 volts in the alkaline pack only to find out they may not work, may give the low voltage alert or go dead after a short time. Both the Sovereign and the Explorer like Art says have voltage regulators in them and the Explorer is made to run great on the 9.6 volts, the Sovereign at 12 volts packs. 8 of the 700 MHa or a 2800 1.2 volt battery give the same voltage, but the 2800 will hold more of the charge for a longer period is the difference from what I am told.
 
I agree with most that you wrote but you are basing on the 1.2v AA only having 1.2v, they don't All that i have used are between 1.3-1.4v when charged, most giving 1.36 - 1.38v
