When Hooking Up a New Coil...

So...I received my new 10X12" SEF EXcelerator coil from KellyCo today. I'm all excited and hook it up and immediately go hunt. My first target out, I hit a penny around 7 inches (just a zinc, but hey, it's money) and I'm thinkin'...wow this coil is great! I start hitting other signals that indicate coinage but all I'm digging are pieces of beer cans, screw tops, etc. "How can this be?" Why is a piece of aluminum foil showing a 94 VDI? I was just about to get p*ssed and then I thought..."what if I take the battery out so I can reboot it?" Well that does the trick. Life sure was sweet after that. When I hit a piece of aluminum foil or a pull tab, the VDI was correct. I'm thinking "this is more like it." I also found a few more modern coins and then had to get home to dodge the tornado's.

I guess the moral of the story is when changing coils (at least from one brand to another) is to reboot your machine.

I think I'm going to like this new coil.

In over 30 years of detecting I have never heard of anyone doing that and I have never had to do it and I have had dozens of coils including the 10x12 SEF. HH Dennis in Idaho

I never REBOOT mine ether I go from coil to coil all I have to do is turn it off and then turn it back on, you don't want to change a coil with the detector still on...................I agree Dennis first I have heard of that........:lmfao:

Nothing is powered directly from the battery. Turning off the switch is the same as removing the battery. This is from Carl (engineer at Whites). Therefore there is no reboot process for the MXT like there is for the DFX - XLT. The only thing that removing the pack on an MXT can fix is a bad battery connection. Rob

All I can tell you is my personal experience. It happened exactly as I described it. Whatever the case, the VDI numbers DID change AFTER I took the battery out for a few minutes. Go figure.

Thanks for clarifying that Rob. By the way where are the photos you promised us of your finds in Tx? HH Dennis in Idaho
