Have some experience setting the Notch Width Dial om my Golden Umax but was wondering when YOU use the Notch Switch(Narrow or Wide). Been told to set Width Dial to get a solid signal on a nickel then go from there! Like to use this switch since I paid for it.:detecting:
THANKS

With your disc switch on (notch off) start turning up the disc dial. As you probably know, every thing below that dial setting is blocked. With the notch switch ON your machine blocks a bit above and below what the dial is set at instead of everything below it. Lets say you have been digging pull tabs. Take a tab and swing over it with notch ON while turning the disc dial up. When the tab starts breaking up you have disc out that target. In the narrow setting the tab will be blocked and all items A LITTLE above it and below will also be blocked. Wide does the same but will block a little wider range. Like taking out a piece of a new apple pie. You then use your tones to alert you to iron because it will not be blocked.

You need to set up a test patch on the ground and play with it. You will see how it works. On clean ground lay down a dime, penny, quarter, piece of silver and maybe some gold of different carats. Your machine will always accept silver even with the disc dial all the way up with notch on or off. There is no way to block that because it would block out everything and your detector would do nothing. To use the notch properly you have to use an unwanted target (like a pull tab) and set the disc dial to the correct setting and turn on the notch. Don't use notch unless you are digging a lot of the same trash like pull tabs.

1. Set Disc to Min
2. Set Thresh and Sensitivity as normal
3. Notch Switch to Wide or Narrow
4. Pass a nickel by coil and turn Notch Width Dial till u get the best solid response and leave dial alone
5. Now turn Disc to Pull tab and Notch Switch to Wide
This is how to search primarily for jewelry
