When do I use ferrous-coin separation?

I have an underwater site (fresh water) with a lot of old iron nails in it, and some modern nails, dispersed very close together. In this matrix are the occasional older coin and potentially some gold and siver rings.

I will be using mostly wide open screens with TTF or combined audio as this seems to be the best way to find good targets in this kind of heavy trash.

Is the ferrous-coin setting the thing to use for this type of area?

Sounds like ferrous coin or maybe high trash would both be worth a shot.

If the mineralization levels are low to moderate, the FE-Coin would be a good Separation mode when working in those old nails. Since you're going to be under water, you won't likely be looking at the screen. In that case, I'd probably load up to different Search modes, each with their own two Patterns, before I got wet. In one mode, I'd plug in FE-Coin, Combined audio, Fast ON and set the discrimination up similar to what you'd use for the same targets in dry ground. Pattern two would be an open screen, with the exception of FE line 35. In the second Search mode, if it were a highly mineralized site, I'd opt for Grd-Coin Separation and again, set up for the amount of discrimination you feel appropriate for the targets you seek. If it is low mineralization, I'd go with High Trash. Regardless, I'd probably set this second mode for 50 tone CO and would consider LONG tone. Again, since you're hunting strictly by ear, chose programs that allow you to take advantage of the audio options. JMHO HH Randy
