Wheaties for supper

I went out for a while this afternoon and hunted a vacant lot. The ground was dry. I found two wheaties and a couple of buried beer cans. The wheaties turned out to be 1916D and 1917. They were only 1/2 inch down. The ground was dry, so I called it a day. I can't wait to go back after a good rain. The soil here is very clayey (granitic bedrock) and tough to dig. I'm using a DFX. It's done well for me. Finds more nickels than other detectors and is good on the beach. But I have not gotten the depth out of this thing that I got out of the GTI 2500 or the CZ70. I was detecting a volley ball court with a 2500 that was loaned to me. I found a 1920 wheat at 6+ inches. I got a quarter at 7 inches once with the DFX in sandy coastal plain soil. It was a 1973. I'm thinking about trading for a 2500.

That would be a wise move. :) Lot of folks don't know how deep a Garrett will really go. I consistently find coins in the bark chips at ten inches with my 250 or my other Garretts. Few years back I recovered three Barber coins in a pile under a tree root at 14 inches with my 2500. So when folks say Garretts have no depth I just smile and say, " Yeah I know."

That thing about the nickels has always interested me, as Ive heard other people say it. I can tell you that I have seen the Garretts beat back others and seek out things quite deep, and do it in trash. Im looking at a 2500 or 2000 next spring.

David,
Because of the duel frequency, the DFX gives a very specific signature for nickels. The discrimination on the DFX is really good. The CZ70 only had 7 disc. slots, but picked nickels better that the 2500. Again, this is a dual frequency machine. But Hey! I found my first Buffalo with the 2500. If I could afford it, I would own all three.
HH,

I dont mind skipping a nickle - Id hate to skip the rare and elusive Au ring.

Im in this hobby a long time, and I am slowly upgrading. Perhaps after my TOL Garrett, a White's is in order. I had the CZ's and didnt care for them, overall, although I thought the nickle response as a high tone coin WAS a nice touch. Thanks.

:biggrin:indeed...
