Wheat to silver ratio?

marcomo

Well-known member
In Michael Chaplan's excellent book, The Urban Treasure Hunter, he said the expected wheat to silver ratio when detecting is 6 to 1.

My wheat to silver ratio is way higher than that. I haven't actually counted, but I'd say it's at least twice that if not a little more.

Is my ratio that high because I'm not using a :minelab:?

Chaplan's book came out in the early 90's so maybe it's changed since then? Wheat pennies were in circulation many years after silver disappeared.

I'm curious as to what ratio others are finding.

Right in the heart:unsure: I would say my ratio is more like 1:1 The SE is a silver magnet I would take it up against any other detector any day.

1:1? hmmmm. I'm taking a trip to Montana.

I'm probably closer to 10:1.

I see you posted this in the Fisher forum too. When I was swinging the F75 in parks it was more like 20 clad to 1 silver :(

The TID on that machine is all over the place. It has it's place, but a park is not it.

4:1 so far this year, been very lucky

I did use an F-2 for a brief spell last year. switched to the SE last November and never looked back. So far this year I have dug about 10 wheat's and 4 Indian but my total silver for this year is 32 ,16 of which are Barber dimes. so I would say my ratio is more like 3.2 silver to 1 wheat. I would like to find more Indian head pennies.

Wow, that is one fine ratio. Sounds like you're really bonding with that Explorer!

I love finding Indians too, but I'll take a Barber over an Indian Head any day.

4.4 wheats to every silver. Hard to distinguish a wheat from silver tone and target i.d. I guess if your hunting using the ferrous/conductivity #'s you would fare better. I still get a big kick out of digging those wheats though...

Mine has always been around 5:1 no matter how I try to change it, even before I started using Minelab.
I'm just digging more silver and more wheats!
136 silver and 609 wheats to date for 2009 and that still gives me a ratio of 1 to 4.48
But I'm not complaining! :detecting:

Nick - You better not be complaining, that is some serious silver!

I'm not even worthy to breathe the same air as you.

Please make me feel a little less inferior by telling me you detect a lot.

If you tell me 2 or 3 hours a week I'm going to need therapy - or maybe an Explorer...

Some days I'll find 8 or 10 wheaties and no silver coins.

I do mostly beach type hunting though.

I am new to parks and land hunting.

OK, I must have had one too many of glasses of iced tea at dinner tonight so I'm still up and I actually counted.

And my wheat to silver ratio was lower than I originally thought: 7.06:1

I think I might have misjudged because at the time I originally posted this I was hitting an old site hard where I found about 25-30 wheaties, mostly in the teens and 20's. Also a couple Buffs, Indians, a Liberty Nickel and various other interesting old stuff - but no silver.

My silver to wheat ratio is 6 to1 almost exactly. I do not detect a lot, normally 35-40 minutes a day on my lunch break and almost entirely at older city parks throughout WI as I drive a semi for UPS and pick a different route every week. I have found 182 wheaties and 30 silver. What I seem to never find are nickels and Indian Head pennies. I have dug maybe 4 or 5 nickels and 1 Indian Head which was in the same hole as 1 of my nickels. PJ
