went to my brother in laws for the day,, he lives in farm country,, decided to hit the lot across the road from his hiuse that he cuts the grass on,, found 6 wheats and a large cent,, 184 something cant read the last number,, will post pictures when i get some batteries in the cam,, NOT ONE MEMORIAL PENNY,, gotta be a piece of silver in there somewhere,,great soil conditions,, deep rich black dirt,, little damp,,

If it's a 184?, it would be a Braided Hair large cent. That is a nice find,I haven't found one of those yet. Sounds like a real good spot to hunt soil conditions are great. In the front of the lot on the right side near the apple trees you will find the silver. Then move to the back and look where a close line my have been, this is where you will find the merc dimes. I call them silver drop spots. HAPPY HUNTING show me the silver

Pretty much what I did,, hit along a path where I suspected the clothes line may have been, picked up a few wheats along there,, a lot of the yard is growed over going back to where the outhouse was,, hes going to cut that,, and we may do a bit of digging for bottles,, noticed today that the large cent is drilled,, two small holes opposite of each other,, did some research,, and apparently it was common practice in the 1850;and back to do it,, seemed to be a craze they went through,, some suspect tethers were put on them for teething rings,, he made some calls and we got permission to do some other old farm s ites,, silver has to be in there

Might have to slow down and use all metal mode ,try and pick out the good signals. Head phones will help. Never had an old yard that didn't give up some silver. I'll be waiting for the pic's of the silver.

Great finds. What I think you have with the holes in the large cent, is what's called a "wizzer". If the holes are far apart and facing each other, then a string was tied in each hole. When you slid your palms past each other, it caused the strings to wind around each other. This caused the coin to spin. When you went the other way, it reversed. You could continueously do this, and the coin would make a wizzing sound. Kids loved them and they were very popular during those times mentioned, and well after the large cents went out of style. Great stuff though. And I agree, there will be more there. HH
