I know what it's basic function is, a magnifying glass. Could be used as a loupe if it was not scratched. But I'm more interested in what it came off of. No markings .. and about the same size as a US half-dollar.
 
In the first picture the bottom outside edge is threaded, so that it would screw into something. And in the second picture you can see that the inside of that edge is also threaded, so something could also be attached in that manner. Basically a male/female end.
 
you got me thinking, i remember maybe a high end electricians flashlight with a lens like that maybe from the 50's or 60s. You could really focus the beam etc It looked tapered like that. CO
 
Looks like a binocular lense or rifle scope lense.
 
I going with the main objective lens from a monocular or binocular. No idea on a possible date though
 
Camera lense, threads to body, threads for filters....
