Member
found this coin/token this morning looks like copper or bronze
any ideas Roman? / Can i retire?
Very small, as small as the half dime i found

Roman Imperial AR Denarius....
There are several Roma coins similar to this but I cannot find an exact match. That doesn't mean it is not what it appears to be, just means I havn't found a pic of it. Depending on where you found it would assume it is likely authentic but I don't know anything about these. I found several listed on the romanumismatics website....>>>>>HERE.<<<<< That is page 11, I think there are similar ones on the next page too.
This one is not exact but close.

That's pretty cool!
I found it in Indiana..... along way from its home
Thanks / Hope to find the exact one

Little known fact, Rome conquered Indiana in 200 BC.

I hope its real...cool find!

Hey aaron your a real asset to this forum nice work! And it wasn't even my coin but you helped me out once and i see u post here all the time. Its appreciated Thanks Paul

Thank you, Paul! I enjoy the forum and helping ID things as many people here have helped me. I find it interesting to research things that you can only describe what they look like. How do you search the internet for an object you cannot tell what it is? Thats the fun of it!
Another great thing about these forums is that the posts don't expire and the research that has been done years ago can be used over and over again. I like to post links to the sources where I find info and then someone else can further the research if they stumble across that post later on.
Hey, all iron, have you found any exact matches for this roman coin yet? How deep was it and what kind of area did you find it? park, school, homestead?

Hi, thanks for asking
No i haven't found an exact match yet.
I plan to take it to a few local coin shops and there is a coin show going on at the fairgrounds this weekend.
I hope someone there will have some insight.

As to where i found it...
Clinton Indiana on a friends family homestead/ nothing left but some old sandstone foundation rocks / house was there in the 1800's
The coin was about 6 inches deep under a brick

What is interesting about Clinton Indiana is that it is a part of Indiana where most of the residence are descendants of immigrants from Italy.
So the possibility is certainly there
My gut tells me its a really old fake

Well, keep us updated if you find anything out. I think it is odd to dig up old fakes or reproduction coins but it happens sometimes.

That's one heck of an old find all iron, especially in the States, well done.

Coin dealer thinks its a fake or token
says its to round for a Roman coin and no writing around the edges
deffintiley not hammered
I have sent the same pics to a museum in London
Maybe they will have some additional comments

I have already quit my job because i know it will turn out to be a 5 million dollar coin.

Even if this is a token or fake coin its at least 100 years old, i'm sure of it based on the location found
100 plus year coins found practically in the same hole.

Hope they get back with me
Will keep you posted

here is the response to my coin

Sorry for the delay in replying. It looks like an early anonymous Denarius of the Roman Republic.

Best regards,
Richard

In other words, he agrees it is authentic because thats what they were called. I was confused about "anonymous Denarius" when I first looked it up but thats what the originals are. Did you inquire about the possibility of it being a modern fake? Its pretty obvious what it 'looks' like but if its actually period to the are that makes it something over 1000 years old, right?
