It came off an old farm. It looks like it might have gone on somekind of a rod, because of the "deal" on the back at the bottom. <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug"> Larry

Looking at the backside again it appears that it can hold 4-5 rods that can be inserted into the top. If so it may be part of a weather vane or other decorative unit. My first thoughts was like the plume on a peacock because it appears that objects placed in these holders would fan out some.
I wouldn't get rid of it that's for sure. Try an antique store in your area.

OK Fat Boy I have youre answer. The back side provided the answer. This was a holder for a series of American Flags, they were displayed on the front of the cars circa 1940. I can recall when they were in use and may if I looked through a couple of family albums find the same thing displayed on a Plymouth convertable that my Dad owned about that time <img src="/metal/html/glasses.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":geek:"> .
