Whats wrong with my deep coin program...

Ism

Well-known member
So today I was out playing with settings for my deep coin program. I was running at 12KHz but decided to drop it to 8KHz because of the sensitivity to a couple very small (near surface) targets that sounded deep.
I don't know if it will help but I didn't dig any small targets after changing the setting but I may not have passed over any either. I also got a lot of falsing "98" TID so I set my notch to 93-99. That solved the falsing issues but created another. Half dollar/dollar and large silver rings fall in around 95 at 8KHz. While I do get a repeatable short chirp, its not good at depth. Quite frankly I seldom find any half dollars and never found a silver/Eisenhower dollar. However I have found a couple large silver rings. This is the deepest I have been able to achieve in air tests while maintaining a clear response to coins. What do you veterans think? Any suggestions?

Here's the program;

Normal | Expert

Disc-5 4-tone 5/43/78
Sens-95 Tx-2
Freq-8KHz Offset-0
Iron Vol-0 Silence-3
Reactiv-1
AudioR-5 Overload-01
Notch 93-99

That looks to be a good program. If you are able to go slower, I would also recommend trying Reactivity=0. I have gotten a bit more depth with a value of "0" but you will have to slow down a bit.

I see your logic with your notch at "93-99," however, I do have to tell you that I found a walking liberty half on my second time out with the Deus and it rang up a clear solid "95" in 12Khz. As you said, it doesn't happen often but I really like when I happen across one and so I don't know if I could risk notching them out them out.

I feel the biggest nuisance in this range are crown caps and I know they are a problem for a lot of Deus users. I can identify them (a lot of the time anyway) because I have noticed that they tend to bounce between 88/89 and 91. When I see the bounce, I know it's a bottle top, every time. I tested this by digging 200 targets that did the "bounce" and not a single one turned out to be a coin. Now I never dig them, unless I am in a spot where I haven't had any hits in a while and want to dig one just to prove to myself that I "know" what it is.

Although the "bounce" seems to work for me, I hope that someone finds/posts a better way to identify these things. I am also hoping for something to help better identify these in one of the future updates as well as the option for a narrower notch field.

Thanks for posting your program and I think you should do very well with it. It surely will quiet down your hunt. Let us know how you get along with it. HH -Marc

I like the iron vol up a bit. I like to hear it myself. I am not a fan of notching. Just my opinion.

I agree, deeper quarters rise in number so I will be notching them out using the current program. I guess I can't stand the idea of missing the good targets for the sake of some noise.
I will try a higher iron volume and remove the notch. I hope XP either eliminates the iron wrap or allows for a 2 digit notch in the next version.

MHirschmann, I can usually cypher bottle caps using 4 tone by a drop off sound and short high tone as I sweep the target (coins are generally smooth on the entry and exit of the sweep). I've also noticed the bounce you speak of.
But two targets I thought were bottle caps turned out to be silver dimes that were next to trash fortunately I dug them. Maybe it was the slight difference that told me to dig. I like to call out the targets before I dig them.
I'm getting better as I go, however the change in frequency from 12k to 8k set me back.

Thanks for your kind replies

Ran,
You'll get noticeable depth increase by bringing the silencer value down. By bringing it down to around -1, 0 or 1 you'll have less filtering/processing goin on. This in conjunction with reactivity has been huge for me. Give it a go during some of your testing to see if you like the results yourself.

Thanks Iomoch, I'll give it a go. I removed the notch also. I was looking over some other programs and saw mine is similar with slight difference.
Today I was out having some fun but the earth is hard so I didn''t do much digging for deep targets...the two I did dig were flattened screw caps 9" deep...ugh!
Its tough enough digging that deep, why couldnt at least one be a coin...lol
