I think it's lead - about the size of a silver dollar (old style)....any ideas what this might have been used for? Thanks.
 
Could be a field made musket barrel band or lots of things. Lead was cast and carved into many items during the Civil War years
 
Looks like a gasket to an old plumming pipe. Lead or Zinc was pord between two pipes to make a seal in the old Days .You find it around old homes that have been torn down
