What's this chatter

I am new to the e-trac and took it out for the first time today and every time I lay it down to dig a target it just chatters like crazy. If I make the coil lay flat on the ground there is very little if any noise. The same thing happens when I'm just carrying it across a field it just chatters even though the coil is 2-3 feet off the ground. Is there a setting that eliminates this chatter? I hit the noise cancellation button and that did not help. I had sensitivity on auto +3. Appreciate any feedback, thanks.

It kind of sounds like your in a high EMI spot , try moving to a new area and see if it happens . Also check your coil cable is tight at both the coil and the head unit.

I've noticed chatter as well when setting the E-Trac down... Came to the conclusion, especially after reading many posts, that the FBS detectors can detect metal objects with the slightest movement of the coil... To the point where a breeze may move the detector when laying on the ground and detect an object is in close proximity to the coil...

I simply ignore the chatter and focus on the detected object, then investigate further about what is causing the chatter once the detected object is located... I enjoy the chatter and have a tremendous amount of confidence in the E-Trac...

Don't overlook roadapple and bertman's comments.
The only time i experience this is occasionally near hi EMI sources, metal objects too near the coil like PPers, digging tools, etc. or more often when i use a hi manual sensitivity setting where turning the detector to Auto usually quiets it down. Yeah the laying down the detector to dig squawking is an annoying PITA.

So annoying in fact is this squawking i'm gonna build an audio muting adapter when i get time, maybe a Winter project.
It will utilize adjustable position sensors to mute the audio when the detector is laying flat on the ground horizontal. It will also have a by-pass switch for searching cliffs, steep hills, etc. where the detector needs horizontal positioning. This adaptor will plug-in between the detector's audio out jack and the earphone plug jack.

I might even design-in gain and tone controls but that would require a battery and a larger adaptor form factor which could be overkill. Been meaning to do this for years now but its always been a low priority. Lately i've got so many other projects in the works not to mention chores i don't even have time to get out and detect.
We'll see.

You guys are probably right about the EMI. I should have waited to say anything until I could detect at another site then could have answered my own question. I will hit another site and if the e-trac acts normal then I know it was EMI. If it keeps chattering I will let you know and hopefully someone can give me a plan B.

Thanks again for the input as I'm a newbie just learning the e-trac.

Tom, this happens with a lot of sensitive and powerful rigs, not just yours, especially running them hot...no worries, no problem with your rig, it is very annoying though I agree, hard to focus on a dig when all that noise is going on in the phones!...you may come up with a system for your digs that eliminates or minimizes it, like you noticed, lay the coil flat instead of in the air....something we all deal with running hot, and learn to deal with....

Problem solved and sorry for wasting everyone's time. Roadapple was dead on it was EMI that was causing the problem. I had hunted the site before with my AT Pro and no noise problem but the first time with the e-trac it was going crazy. Today I went to another site and the machine was perfect no noise whatsoever.

its not a waste of time at all, we all experience issues and this is the place to discuss it.

I was also thinking EMI but the other folks already responded. the etrac coil is like an antenna. very sensitive to anything. im convinced one time mine kept chattering any time lightning would strike in the far distance.
