What's the secret to getting the coil cable in the shaft without tearing it up?

It took me 20 minutes to finally work it in there. It tried spreading the shaft apart with different tools and nothing seemed to work. There has to be a better way.

try some dish soap.. just coat the cable and it will go in easier.. after its in there you shouldnt have to take it out again

When you got finished was the connector hanging correctly? The owners manual shows how it should be inserted.

Run a string down the shaft hole then tie it to the cable and pull it through.

Do you mean in the bottom shaft slot or the top shaft. The coil cable is oblong (in a cross section it would be shaped like an egg) and should be fitted in the slot with the narrow part sideways and gently pushed in. If you mean the top shaft, the coiled part of the cable should slip right in and the top shaft slid down on the bottom shaft until the connector emerges. Screw on the connector to the control unit, slide in the shaft about 2 inches into the control unit until it stops and lock in. You may have to pull out the lower shaft about 3 inches to allow the slide in. Adjust the bottom to fit your height and away you go.

The cable is not round it will only go in one way. If you get it started the right way it will go in with little effort. If it doesn't don't force it rotate it 90 degrees.
