Whats the scoop on EMI and present day units..

Companies will tell you their units are so powerful they pick up every minute particle in the ground and also outside sources. Well I have used several different units over the years that will get a silver dime at 10 inches plus...little or any EMI ...Doubt if the present day ones will go any deeper. Now are we going backwards or am I missing something..Input appreciated...

I think something has to be mentioned regarding EMI. There is A LOT more EMI these days than years past. That might affect older units under certain circumstances as they weren't designed for todays conditions. Then again, they were sort of natually shielded with their robust design (I do think machines like a Nautilus with their steel construction probably gets good shielding.)

Picking up lots in the ground, I think, might be a combination of power and the faster and faster recovery speed we are now seeing. Also, the units with frequencies that are 15khz and up, seem to pick out those really small particles in the ground. (After all, that is where gold machines operate). I'm really no expert here though, but have seen this topic come up on occasion.

I think the difference we are starting to see now, is the mid range detectors getting very very close to (if not the same) depth as the high end units. You can add the Garrett AT Pro to that list too.

Regarding EMI interfering, I think the companies should shield their units better, but perhaps they can solve a lot of those problems within the electronics. Units today seem mostly made out of plastic, though I'm not sure how well shielded they are underneath. Also, as has been discussed here, the coils are shielded with a spray as well. Some new and very fast as well as fairly powerful units seem to be running quite quiet these days.

I do think present day units get better depth around iron though, probably due to advances in electronics , playing around with timing, etc. as well as the recovery speed. Anyway, the old units don't go as deep in iron as present day units. I'm pretty sure there.

I think the next great advance we are seeing right now, mid priced units giving more bang for the buck. This is probably due to the parts becoming cheaper along with the technology just getting better. I have a feeling next year will be interesting and some recent detectors (like the AT Pro, Omega, etc.) are pushing manufacturers across the board. Minelab and Tesoro better be working on a release as with the Minelabs, why spend 2X as much money for roughly the same depth? (For general conditions.)

Sorry if that was disjointed and all over the place...

Lets face it we are not English majors or speed typists and I felt it offerred some good points.

Look at the construction, why with some of the old units you could drive golf balls and present design is plasticky(lighter of course) which may or may not affect shielding.

Last but not least with I-phones blackberries, PC's and modern electronics seems to me ought to much more interference factors to be dealth with.

Whoops...have to agree with your frequency analogy...heck my CZ with a dual freq. of 5 and 15 was hot on silver and gold.

Anymore thought...guys and gals...

what is it with the talk of EMI. interference, I don't understand, I have hunted under power lines many tines and never has problems, do you hear it threw the machine or is it a lack of depth, Because of my schedule, I have hunted alone for over 10 years, so a lot of the problems you guys talk about I have no reference too, two other issues are hitting trees and rocks, all my machines faults, and digging bottle cap, I assume it's at the beach you mean, I dig those all the time, some of the places I dig, that's all there is and some times there is a goodie mix in, I guess I need to hunt with more people and compare notes
