New member
Had my dfx for a year now and can't get used to it, still using the pre set programs would like to know some easy setting changes that would increase my depth

Try asking this on the White's DFX classroom forum:
http://www.findmall.com/list.php?28

You may get a quicker answer there.

Happy Hunting,

[size=large]you been at it a year so you should know to get the guru's book. every machine seems to have a guru who has written the book on it. the DFX is , "Digging Deeper With The DFX", by Jeff Foster. Jimmy siera also has a book, "Understanding The DFX". so maybe the question might be, what books are helpful to understand my machine. then you'll learn to adjust your machine according to your area. your best bet is try to find a club unless your dealer knows the DFX. there's so much info on this forum but there's so much more info needed from you to get the help you seek.
that's no simple machine you have there.

As mentioned, the DFX Classroom forum is full of ideas from the past 6 years, but the main two settings that affect depth the most are the GAIN and AC.

Finding the balance of adjustments is what gets you maxed depth but just playing with the two adjustments Larry mentioned is what initially gets you there. Once I started hunting with a higher Pre-Amp Gain (at first) is when I had things going my way. (In a lot of sites a full setting of 4 was as stable as it gets.) Here in the NW, our mountains and dirt are new geologically. Our valleys and flood plains are a mix between organic build (low mineralization) and right with it can be extremely mineralized volcanic till....eat your Wheaties and adjust on the fly! Learn the Gain and AC balance well, Sweep Speed and filters follow next. Don't sell single frequency short either! When I first began using the DFX, I did nothing with the internet, forums or reviews. About 6 years ago I entered all this and when I read people weren't getting depth with it I went "What the heck?". Once the basics were learned, deep was the norm. Check out that classroom!

Depends on what settings your already on, soil types IE which country would be a good start, you will find though once you get your 41 settings sorted out, then most of the time your working between your gain and your ac sence.
I got four of my own programs stored in my eprom, but i doubt if they be any good for you unless you lived in the UK
Normally when i go detecting now i just decide which program to use then if i need to tweak ac sence or preamp gain its a peace of cake, just the flick of your toggle switch and your in that menu,
That's providing you set them as your hot keys of course.
I find the DFX simple to use these days, but i got to admit it took months and hours on end to get to know the machine and to be able to tweak it right up.
I can see why allot of detectorists went for the MXT which is according to Whites technical the more basic version of the DFX.

Anyway them who dares wins

All the best

That MXT is a very straight forward machine but fundamentally a different architecture than the DFX.. (It was developed during the development of the GMT,a gold machine, and shares processing concepts with it instead.) Which is better for a person? Depends on the person. Every time I've used a borrowed MXT....WOW! Still, with my DFX.....I could weave through situations where the MXT couldn't follow and.....still again....end of day....NO shortage of finds from either. (I never felt truly comfortable to say that one was better than the other....just different.)
