whats the best metal detectors for gold?

dobbie

New member
I do want to start using my md to prospect. what would bea good machine for doing this , why is it in your opinion the best and how much does a good machine run. we are talking just strictly for gold here. thanx for any input you may have HH

They say it's the Minelab GPX-4500.

Cost $5,000.

I don't know that's just what they say.

Tesoro Lobo Super Track is $640 and
is rated well for the price.

HH,

Hi Dobbie,
I can vouch for the Lobo ST. I've found nuggets and specimen gold with one. Still have a quarter ounce nug I found a couple of years back. The Minelab PIs will undoubtedly go deeper, but unless you've already got gold galore or you plan to nugget hunt full-time, it's hard to justify the expense. The first gold I found with the LST was a piece that weighed about 1/4 of an ounce, and was as much rock as gold. At one of the GPAA shows, I waved it under one of the high dollar Minelabs, and the machine didn't make a "peep." That's one of the downsides of the PI; they tend to pass up the smaller bits and dispersed-in-rock gold. I also owned an MXT and tried it in the tailing pile where I found gold. Don't know if I just never passed over the right spot, but didn't find any of the yellow stuff. There are a lot of good gold detectors out there; like most detectors, there probably isn't one that's absolutely the"best" for everyone. Like many things in life, "it all depends."
Good luck to you,
Dave

But it works like a charm I am told. If your just looking for Hobby Gold a lot of the Tesoros will fit the bill. A good self GB Tesoro will work. Now I am not saying it's the best way to prospect..But they will hit small nuggetts. You may not find a lot of gold flakes, but you will have a lot of fun. With results at a price you can stand...Try it before you run out and spend a small fortune..Gold prospecting isn't for everyone..It's a hard road to travel. Just a reminder for those that do not know....GOLD isn't found everywhere.....Get info from the Gold Prospectors Club. Google it up and you can learn a lot.

i wish i could. i have prospected before a little. just mainly panning in the American River. There is alot of gold up this way I am told..This is the area where Sutter started off the gold rush and people prospect all around here. i just figured it would be fun to try.....

I think the old White's Goldmaster 3 was the best gold detector ever made. A lot of machines can find the bigger nuggets but let's face it there's a lot more smaller nuggets than larger nuggets, that's where the Goldmaster 3 excels. I did a lot of nuggetshooting in Gold Basin AZ. and the only machines I ever found gold with were the Goldmaster v/Sat and the Goldmaster 3. I used a Fisher Gold Bug, Minelab XT 17000, Minelab XT 18000, Minelab SD 2000, Tesoro Lobo, Tesoro Lobo ST, Tesoro Diablo mm, only found gold with the Goldmasters. I wound up selling all those machines except the Goldmaster 3. I still have it, now that I've moved to the pacific northwest I don't use it anymore and have been considering selling it or trading it. Here's some nuggets I found with the Goldmaster, using an old wheat penny that I found with it also for scale.

I would sell mine for $375 and throw in a brand new Sierra GoldMax coil and cover,
value of this coil alone without the cover is $129.

To beat the dead horse again, serious Gold hunting can't really be
done on the cheap. Detectors, equipment, vehicles, fuel, fees,
etc., all add up. But just for the fun of it, here's some great
prospecting websites with great pix of lot'sa Gold!
Some of the units used are Minelabs, Whites MXT, Fisher GB2,
Garrett Infinium, Tesoro LST.
Enjoy!

At what distance from the coil were those nuggets picked up? What are the frequencies the detector uses?

The depth Gold is found is mostly dependent on its size.
Higher frequencies (10kHz to 70kHz) will find smaller nuggets
better than freq's lower than the above, But lower freq's will
penetrate ironized (mineralized) soil more deeply than the
higher freq's.Of course, the higher freq's will also find big
nuggets too. But most nuggets found are small, with the bigger
specimens being the exception in most Gold areas. These freq's
are for VLF's of course, using all metal modes only.
Most serious prospectors use pulse units though, since those
are not as affected by high mineralization as are VLF's.
Plus pulse units will go deeper in "hot" soils.

Also, smaller nuggets won't respond as well to a big coil as
they will a smaller coil (8" or less). Most smaller nuggets are
found shallow (5" deep or less). Big nuggets can be found deeper
of course.

And as always, the old saying remains true..."Gold is where
you find it"!

The MXT and the MineLab (x-70) are right up there side by side.
The GoldBug is said to be good to. If your not hunting in Australia then you could probably do without
the MineLab. The MineLabs were built in response to the harsh ground down under. However, you can awitch frequencies on the MineLabs (x-70)
I don't think you can do that with the MXT.

If you can save the money I'd get the machine new. You may never need the warrenty that comes with it
but it doesn't hurt to have it. I bought my MXT used but had no warrenty. Had to send it in to have the
VID screen replaced. You almost NEVER hear of a Whites going bad but it can happen.
Good Luck
