WHATS THE BEST ALL AROUND COIL FOR THE GT:shrug:

I don't really thnk that there is one BESTALL AROUND coil for the Sovereign .....There are so many great coils for the Sovereign and they all have their strengths .......The 10" Tornado is no sloutch at all ....For a 10 inch coil it does very well for area's like parks where you might run into a bunch of trash but you still need to cover ground ....It's lighter than the BBS 1000 coil which is an ANCHOR !!... If the woods is where you like to hunt , strap on a SunRay S-5 to get in between the weeds and the tight areas ..... If goiing to the beach , get yourself a Swingy Thingy and put a 12 x 15 SEF on the end of your Sovereign and start walking !!!.... Those 3 coils should cover the bases pretty good for most, if not all , of your detecting needs ..... The best all around coil is like saying what's your best all around fishing pole ......There just isn't one that can do it all .....and yes, variety IS the spice of life !!....JIm

I feel the 12x10 is the best all around coil for land hunting. Better separation than a 10 or 12" standard DD coil, maximum depth and stability, and so many other improvements. For the beach the 15x12 might be the best all around coil on dry sand because of it's better coverage, but not necessarily giving you more depth than the 12x10 (but for sure better depth than the stock 10" coil). In the water the 15x12 had too much drag, so for that I'd say either the stock 10", S-12, or 12x10 (haven't tried this one in the water yet, but I suspect it shouldn't have any more drag than the S-12 or 10" ). Some might argue an 8" coil is the best all around coil for land but I wouldn't, unless you exclusively hunted high trash areas but even then I suspect the 12x10 will unmask some targets that an 8" standard DD coil won't due to the SEF's unique detection field dynamics.

PS- Despite claims that implied otherwise by one particular member of this forum, I *HAVE used the 8" BBS coil on land and so can speak of it in comparison to others. In fact, you see that 1835 Bust dime mentioned in my signature file? I got that and a large cent in the same hole using that coil. Never assume, because you know what that does.

I only have the 10 inch Tornado and am very pleased with it. The problem is I hunt mostly trashy areas so need a smaller coil also. For me, I think it comes down to either the Sunray 5 inch, the SEF 6x8 inch, Sunray 8 inch or the Tornado 8 inch. With the T10 and a small coil I could then hunt almost anywhere effectively with the GT. Has anyone used the SEF 6x8 inch on the Sov GT and how does it compare to the S5, S8 and T8??? Thanks. James

Thanks and excuse my ignorance. I think it probably comes down to the S5 coil for me. Along with the T10 I would have most areas covered. Maybe I'm just spoiled after using the MXT with a 5 inch coil.

They did make this coil (or a size very close to it....see my coil weight chart where it's listed) over in the UK for a very short while. Last year some guy on here bought the last one they made for the Sovereign over there. Never heard him give a performance report on it I don't think. I'm not sure if that coil was classified as an SEF or as something else by them, if that matters. There also is the Joey and Platipus which are odd shaped coils as well. Really when it comes to max seperation I don't care about depth, but the S-5 gets really good depth. 7 or 8 ".
