Whats is your "Audio Response" Set to? :jump:

And why? According to the instruction manual pg 62 . We should not be using normal unless we are just starting out.

Normal "Blanks out" at the end of the signal making it cut out sharply. in essence same as nulling and taking time to recover. We are losing targets this way even in TTF. If your over a piece of iron and slowly moving the coil the blanking can occur over a "good" target.

Pitch hold also produces the same effect. So If you really don't want any interruption between targets our only choice seems to be Long or Smooth.

"Normal emits a short response to targets. Normal is recommended for general detecting conditions. Has the potential to miss small targets in areas littered with objects" Short version of Normal response from pg 62

So if you are using TTF because of high trash areas to begin with and your using normal it is not the optimum setting for those conditions.

If you are using Long or Smooth please let us know.... and why you prefer either one.

Sorry double post... Original here http://www.findmall.com/read.php?63,1467793

I have tried every tone available on the E-Trac and they all have their place but changing the response changes the tones to a point that I can no longer tell the difference between a silver dime and a penny. I like smooth on the beach when I use my E-Trac. If I am hunting large fields where targets are few and far between long tone will get your immediate attention. Pitch and hold has a place I just have'nt found it yet. I metal detect for enjoyment and I'm not going hunting worrying if I am in the right tone response or have the correct pattern for a certain area. I like to go and get out whatever machine I'm going to use turn it on and hunt. If I find something fine If not fine. But I can't really remember the last time I went and did not find anything, Enjoy this great hobby for what it is a GREAT HOBBY. HH :minelab:

It might just be me but I don't like to use the other Audio response features. I've tried them on every model of Explorer and now my E-Trac and I prefer normal. I'm no pro but I find my share of goodies. Like anything else you have to get use to using something new so my guess would be if I was forced to use one of the other audio respones after awhile I would get use to it. Until someone shows me something they found while in smooth or long and I can't hear it in Normal I'm sticking to normal  What ever works for you is fine. Give them a try and let us know how you do.

Audio smooth works best without discrimination in TTF, other way is not much point. use it only on special places, because its very hard on brain and ears. I use it allot in iron spots where I know should be something.

After experimentation while I am out hunting over real targets in real conditions, I have set mine to NORMAL. And no, I don't worry a bit about missing 'small' targets or any other targets.

While you are out hunting, find some targets in your given settings, guess what you think it will be, and then change some of the settings and see how it effects the audio and visual responses. Does adjusting something make the signal more clear? Less? Disappear altogether?

It really doesn't take that long to begin to form your own opinion about your detectors' settings. And you may find that your settings are different than mine or somebody elses, AND THAT IS OK.

Good luck.

I use smooth. Sometimes I check it in normal just to see. You can have lots of noise when using smooth and very little disc BUT when you go over a targen using smooth it will lock on and produce a nice hum. Those are the targets I dig and I ignore the hacky chopy targets. Faired well so far.

I'm REALLY new to the etrac and have trouble with my ears. I have dropped back to 4 tone until I get more time on the machine

Myself I like the pitch hold as I too dont like how fast normal is from a threshold to a signal and back to a threshold on the deep targets as it dont give me time to hear them. Now pitch hold give me a change in tone so if I go over a differnt target i notice the tone changes of the threshold so I know it see something differnt and once I hear the high tone threshold I know I need to check it out more.

Heck after you dig the signal target your going to resweep the spot anyways right and if there is anything else there your going to hear it and dig it up. If you don't re sweep your missing out on a lot of possiable targets I would say.

If it's in FAST mode it clips the sound so I would check to see if you have your detector set to fast or not in that normal mode fast off and deep off in normal mode the target gives a nice good signal. When I tried Marksman7's way of fast on and deep on even in normal mode for sounds it made the target signal seem wider anyways just like long did so I still left it in normal sounds unless it's really, really, really trashy then long works to ferrout a good target better.

Haven't tried smooth only in conductive mode and prefer normal as it gives more of a nuance to the signals to help with the decision to dig or nor. Good targets generally give a better signal than crappy ones and I want to hear that not mask it or change that.
