could anyone or all tell me whats the best machine in their opinion is the best machine for gold chains.i have an excal it doesn't do very well on them but does work well on rings , coins and silver thanks kent

no machine will be great on gold chains they see them as individual links not one mass, the only machine i had that found them was the fisher impulse but its not worth getting one, i hear the duel field gets the small links but not tried one.

What I want to bring to your attention here is the fine 18K gold chain. It was recovered with an Excal 1000 in over waste deep water and was a broken low. It is the finest chain I've ever found with ANY detector. There was NO PENDANT, MEDALLION, etc. on it. You already have the best salt water chain finder.

Here is a couple more with the Excal, but heavier.

as stated gold chains are tricky-I believe its just the luck of the draw to hit one.don't think any machine will tell its gold before digging or else everybody would own one.best to hunt slow listen for faint signals and dig everything as not to miss any thing

i have found alot of chains while digging coins and other items it can be the luck of the draw, i have also got a signal dug to find a chain in my scoop but when i tried the hole i had another signal a medalion so the moral is if you find a chain it might of been the medalin that gave the signal and fell off a broken chain as yoou dug.

Hi Plymouth,

Are you doing dry or wet sand? Are you looking for recently lost items or deep old stuff?

For dry sand there is somes very good and fast MD out there. For dry sand and wet sand up to couples inches of water, i do pretty good with the MXT. With the proper setting, the MXT do fine in salty wet sand, but make sure you do not put water on the box.It is not a water machine. On a windy day or when I am touching the water, I put a plastic bag to protect the computer and i can still use the control true the bag.It is very good for small items and very fast to.

On the other hand, if you do proper setting on the Excal, you can catch some very small items, but nothings very deep and in slow motion only. You have to put your sensitivity very hi.Depending of the ground, up to 9 o'clock, disc.1or2.By setting up your sensitivity, your asking your Excal.to pick up lot more information from the ground, if you give your detector time to analyse all that extra info, he will tell you about the Little's ones. The disc. is better tan all metal, on the type of ground i work for small items. But forget the deeps and the speed.

i do a lot of wading in salt and fresh water, for land i use my dfx how slow of a sweep would you use for the excal?most finds in the ponds would be newly lost should i run in disc or pinpoint thanks kent

By working with the DFX, just like the MXT, we get use of fast swing. Going back with the Exc, we tend to go to fast. That is why i always carry a Small test pack with me.So i can readjust my self some times.

Just put a small hearing or chain in a zip lock 4'' in the sand (deeper for deep setting) and do some test. I the beach i work, to get recently lost small items, 2.5 sec. for a full 130 deg swing is about the max. speed. Faster and you start to loose to much target and it is not worth it.

The only way to know for sure, is to do your own test, for what you are looking for, at the beach you go.\

Good luck
