Looking to buy my 10yr old a son a decent detector. Prefer something easy to operate and light weight. Any suggestions?

Tesoro compadre.Tesoro just released a new compadre model with the 8" coil. Some will say the Garret ace.I heard it was very good also.Very good activity for that age very much so.If he takes to this you are going to wish you never started this.Just kidding. The Tesoro has a lifetime warranty which is nice. :).

tesoro compadre all the way, life time warranty and they just might that real good stuff that we look hard for too!

The top three beginner units it seems are the Garrett Ace 250, Fisher f2, and Tesoro Compadre.

Another vote for the Tesoro Compadre. The price is right. It has a lifetime warranty. It is easy to use and finds stuff!

Fisher F2 or Garrett ACE 150/250. Younger kids Need the visual display...there is plenty of time for them to learn to hunt by sound in the future if you can keep them interested enough in the hobby.

Tesoro Compadre would be my pick and was. It's not just a great beginner detector, it deadly in the hands of a experienced user.

For the beginner you can set the discrimination high and dig mostly good stuff.

I got my eye on the new Tesoro Compadre with the 8 inch coil. It's a new release. It should be the cat's purr for those users wanting to cover more ground.

Do a Google search, its gets by far the highest user ratings.

Tesoro compadre, Fisher F-2 or the Ace 250. STAY AWAY FROM THE ACE !
The 150 is just useless in my opinion. Might as well start the kid out right from the very
get go!

Thanks for all of your input . I'm thinking the Compadre is gonna be my choice. Looks like some thing I could also use in tight places and around playground equipment
