I took these two in on a trade. I know the Morgan, it's the one-center I'm wondering about. Anyone ever seen one of these? Is it a fake, Canadian, or what? I'm a little curious!

Thanks, Kevin. I didn't know there was such a thing. Money must have gone much further then. You would think the token would cost more than 1 cent to produce.

Do you know why these were made? Were they Confederate, or US government produced? Since you clued me in on what they were I noticed a few on the big E, so they must have been common way back then. It would be ironic if they ended up more valuable than the actual currency of the day.

Where can I find out more about it? Thank you again.

As I understand it, people were hoarding gold, silver, and copper during the Civil War and merchants were having trouble making small change on purchases. So these merchants had tokens made (privately, not government) to give to customers as change...sort of like a store credit toward their next purchase. Some of these tokens are valuable. I sold several a couple of years ago on eBay and got anywhere from $20-200. You may want to contact the Civil War Token Society at www.cwtsociety.com for more info. I believe your token has the Fuld number 390 or 391. Hope this helps. :) HH, Kevin
