Just a hypothetical question. In this day and age where most of the public places have been pounded to death and the good target's are far and few between, someone came up to you and asked you to choose a place to detect and you could only have one coil to do it.Would you choose a trash infested area and a small coil in hopes of finding some good stuff in an area that other's found to difficult to hunt or would you go for the really deep stuff and choose a big coil? Just curious to see what area you guy's and gal's would choose to give you the best chance of finding the oldest and the most. I think I would go for the trashiest area's, my thinking is that I don't think most of the coin's are that deep anyway and the chance's of finding a few more coin's would be better in trash.

Gear Box; Go for both; take the trash infested area with lots of people, trash and traffic. Take the big coil and just dig everything it will eventually get everything weeded out. Id have to agree that the old coins dont have to be that deep and probally arent but its like santa clause; Even if you dont believe in him you are good around Dec "just in case your there is really one" Bigger coil might get you down to a oldie worth having after you get all the trash and clad dug up.
Good Luck

Big Coil. If there was some stupid rule that said I could only have one.

Although much less fun, I can slowly remove trash from a given area with a big coil and open it up so I can find the deep coins. I can hunt through that same trash easily with a small coil, and remove that trash easily using the small coil, but the small coil will never reach the depth of the larger coil.

That said, it's best to have both if you hunt areas where you need them both. There are some tight places that a big coil can't get into and some 'deep' areas that a little coil can't reach. I like having a coil around 7-8" and a larger 10-11".

If you can't afford both at once, get the small coil, find fistfuls of clad coins and then go buy a large coil with them. :crylol:
