what would you do if local news wanted to interview your hobby?

Yes that's the question ? A detecting buddy has been approached two times by local news media at the beach wanting to know more about the hobby, he's declined both times, reason ! He said all it will do is bring more competition . OK that's his choice , but what if he showed all the trash , broken bottles , with the caps still on, sharp junk ! Things that we clean out of the beach and water ! What's your thoughts ..waterhound

Five years ago the local newspaper took my picture while I was detecting at a local park. He did not ask for my permission. I would have declined. After the picture, this park saw many new people detecting and unfortunately several were "bad eggs". Full sized shovels were being used and if that was not bad enough, they were leaving all of their trash sitting beside these huge plugs. The lawn mower guys approached me to tell me about crushed pop cans laying in the excess dirt from these holes. I will never willingly advertise my detecting spots.

I have had 3 different reporters take my photos and I stressed that I was using a screwdriver and left the area as I found it. I even told how newbies mistakenly bring shovels to a local park/school thinking to find Captain Kidd's treasure. NONE of the articles were printed.:surrender:

Run far, run fast. It might bring unwanted attention to an issue that didn't used to be an issue, if you get my drift!

I here ya loud and clear , this hobby does not need attention ,the bone diggers in michigan have a lot of people thinking the history layer is 1 inch down every where , in some national parks you can detect but not dig .a woman kicked me out of a county park last year , even though its been allowed for 40 or more years , l just told her I would leave to keep the peace, l don't think its written in the law .

Run the other way I will , I am so paranoid of some grounds keeper blaming detectorist for ground squirrel holes that I fill everyone I find and pick up trash , l know of a fella that caries some grass seed with him and will drop some in with the plugs he closes , after these post from you guys I will be more mindful , maybe that's why guys where camouflage ! I like watching the hover boys but can imagine what it looks like if four or five big guys like them hit a small town park with shovels , l water hunt more and wading out deeper has helped me stay clear of drunks and kids and now reporters !.

I had the news show up once. While trying to get me to consent for an interview..while reporter was talking to me. I heard his camera man calling the Park System asking if they knew I was digging in the park.. True fact !!
I left immediately while telling them loudly," I did not consent to be interviewed", or videoed...

Run from them...They only want to stir up trouble.

I guess so! What a lesson from you guys, my friend said he was in the water and a girl with a shaved head from cancer treatment swam over to him and wanted to know what he was doing ? He took the time to show her while her daddy watched nodding in approval , and after they were done she left holding the treasures he gave her , how precious! One time l could not get rid of a small boy who seen me find a quarter l told his mother not to let him follow me into the water she stopped him but hours later when l stepped out of the water he and a bunch of kids with their parents wanted me to show them how it works , so l took a few pull tabs and change buried them and let the boy put the head set on and listen to the sounds then find them with a pin pointer , when it was over l told him to hold his hands out and gave him a pile of tabs change and neat junk , his little eyes were huge , his mom all most crying and l was drained , so l guess certain people at special times is OK , but rarely. Hunting mornings and rainy days and non crowded times would be better Many times I've acted like I don't here someone and just moved on , it does piss me off when people want to ruin such a fun hobby .that really cleans are places we play . johnny rain clouds

Out of sight out of mind!
