What would you do? Club hunt...

Tomorrow morning I'll be doing a club hunt on the beach, (my first!)
The club will be seeding an area and I will need to be fast on my feet! LOL
Would you use the 5X8 for faster swing speed and quicker target pinpointing OR
use the 8 1/2 X 11 for more ground coverage?
I feel that I would be able to swing the smaller coil a lot faster than the bigger one
and the pin pointing would also be faster with the smaller one too..
Whatchya all think!
Prizes include a piece of eight and a new Garrett detector! How sweet is that!

Pete
hmm wonder if anyone here is in my club! LOL

I did the Atlantic City event in May and used the 8.5x11. It was just the right match for my hand scoop. Just practice pinpointing a coin sized target without having to push the PP button. Speed is everything. Good luck, Joe.

I never use the PP anyway but just thought the 5X8 would be faster. The hunt is tomorrow morning
so can't practice.
I purchased this scoop and got it yesterday! I think its going to be a fast scoop!
I imagine all targets will be in dry sand... It's called the Sand Gator!

I did a short video on the box opening! haha my first detecting related video!

Honestly I think it would be better if it were closed where the handle is and the handle were raised up. This is similar to the one I have.http://www.kellycodetectors.com/cart/image.php?model=519-34&height=100&manufacturer=kellyco&file=519-34_1f.jpg You just scoop the target, make sure you have it with the detector, cover the hole and move on to the next target. We had to use carpenter nail pouches the were provided. I would wait till I had a couple coins in the scoop and just dump the hole thing in the pouch. With this style you can shake the sand out and not worry about loosing your coins and keep moving. I'm sure the one you got will work just fine though. Especially if the sand is good and dry. The stock coil will cover more ground. Speed is everything in these hunts. Finding as many tokens as you can in a short period of time. Good luck, Joe.

I agree 100% so wouldn't I be able to swing that 5x8 faster?
I don't know ! LOL I mean how much more really is it going
to cover right?

How did you do in AC anyway? Win anything? Was it fun?

Either coil is fine remember these hunts are fun and when the bury Tokens for Prizes if you find one in one area move quickly toanother area most prize tokens are buried far apart Good Luck and let Us know how you do I usually hunt in our hunts with a tesoro Amigo II or a Vaquero with small coil

When I do competition hunts I use the 8 1/2 X 11, use the velcro strap to hold the detector to your arm. Use a short hand scoop made with screen wire (sifts the sand quicker). If you have a speed basket use it( if they are aloud). the MOST IMPORTANT thing NOT to do is look at your recovered target every time you scoop one. WAIT until the hunts over then look at your finds( speed is the key to a good hunt). Also do not discriminate as the hunts I do usually have tokens that come in low on the discrimination. JMO and GOOD LUCK

yep but also less trash quicker pinpoint trust me it will be better use than the stock coil in a comp hunt try it and see

Jeese! Luise!

Ok. Changin out coils again... Puttin the small one back on! LOL
I'll let ya'll know how it goes!

Piece of eight or new Garrett would be sweet! haha But the camaraderie
will be nice too.. Lunch afterwards..

Pete

You are hunting in sand....the large coil is the one to run. The hunts don't last long...swing like a mad man!!! I have won many grand prizes at seeded hunts. I swing very fast...and move even faster.

You made the right choice. You'll do fine. I did exactly what JOE in MD does. Move fast and hope for the best. At the AC event I only found 2 tokens. They painted one side of a wheat penny different colors. I won 2 copper rounds that look like US coins only bigger. There was about three hundred people, maybe more at the event so I'm lucky I found anything. People everywhere! I did leave with 61 wheat Penny's, 11 buff nickles, 10 Indian heads, a bunch of foreign coins and a three ringer. IT was a blast and am going back next year. Good luck Pete! Joe.

300 !!! Holy shoot! LOL
Well that was nice that you got all those coins anyway! I would have
loved to go home with that right?
Gettin ready to go now.. This is a hunt just for our own club, maybe 20 or so people,
should be fun'
OK, be back later to report! LOL

Well! The hunt is over and I didn't do to shabby!
I couldn't even imagine trying to do this with the 5X8 at all! The bigger coil
was the way to go for sure... Thanks for that tip guys!!! ; )

Anyway, the club (which I only joined last month) buried 1000 tokens (painted penny's) out on the beach.
There was only 13 of us hunting!
I started out swinging nice and fast finding a lot of tokens! I could have used a wider
mouthed scoop for even faster recovery but the Sand Gator did very well. My pin pointing
should have been better also.
So I kept going as fast as I could and kept finding token after token not even looking
in my scoop at all! Every once in a while I would stop and dump what I had into my pouch
and just kept going. It was HOT! After a while the sweat was all inside my sunglasses
and I could hardly see! haha
Well they called for everyone to stop after which we all headed back to the Pavilion to
count our finds and eat.
I counted up all my tokens and wound up finding 53 of them and an old penny. Some kind
of flying something or another... (I don't know my coins that well) lol
Well after we all ate they started giving out the prizes.
I came in fourth place with my 53 tokens and won a pair of Garrett (small) headphones. ( can't use them with my AT Pro unless I get the adapter)
WELL, after they gave out the prizes for most tokens found they announced that anyone (me)
who found an old penny (which there was ONLY THREE!) were able to pick from three envelopes on the table
for the Grand Prize of the Silver Piece of Eight and two other smaller prizes.

I picked first since my 53 tokens was more than the other two guys BUT I didn't pick the Reale! OUCH! LOL
I did win a new Garrett digger for my old penny find and I was happy for that.
The winner of the Reale was very happy too as you can imagine!

So after all it was a fun morning of hunting and I learned a lot and had fun! Great camaraderie!

Our clubs web site is http://www.tcas.us/ and I'm sure they'll post photos of the hunt soon!

Thanks guys for the tip on using the bigger coil. Like I said, I couldn't imagine doing it
with a small coil, no way, would have never been as fast!

Jeese, that's a lot of typing.... LOL

Pete
