What would you choose for a 2nd coil?

Hello all,

I'm a returning member from several years ago. I started with a XLT, which frustrated the hell out of me being a newbie, so I sold it and purchased an MXT. I had the MXT for about 18 months when they first came out. I found tons of coins and a couple rings. Back then, I had the stock coil and a 4X6 back then. I live in NE Kansas, and really loved the small coil.

I had to get out of the hobby because the ex didn't think I needed an expensive toy, but I digress.

I have a MXT 300 on the way, and $150 in Whites bonus bucks burning a hole in my pocket even before it gets here. What coil you choose as your second coil to go with the 12" stock coil???

I"m mainly a coin hunter, but enjoy relics also. Not much gold here in Kansas. I will be hunting old homes sites and public parks. I recently moved to the KC area, so if anyone from that area has any suggestions for hunting sites, than that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,

Brett

I bought the 300 as well and immediately went back and picked up the Eclipse 5.3 coil as I live in a high trash area. Probably similar in results as the 4x6 you said you have used.

If trash is not a problem and neither is the size of the 300, how about a top of the line pair of headphones?

just got my 150 bonus bucks today it only took them a little over a week to send it to me very fast , i got the bag and the leashe digger used it today very happy with it also got some hats movie and the apron good luck to you

I have both the 4X6 and the 5.3. If I could have only one, I'd probably keep the 4X6 as I hunt several very trashy places. However, if you can eventually work both into your budget, the 5.3 is a bit more friendly as an all around coil. Also like the 6X10 a lot, but the two smaller have the edge in trash although the 6X10 will handle trash much better than the stock 9.5 and larger. My two cents.

I have been using my MXT for about 6 years and own all the coils except for the new 10"DD. I recently bought the 5.3 Eclipse which has become my coil of choice next to the 12" Super coil. I found my oldest coin with it at a depth of about 6 or 7 inches with a rusted nail next to it, this was in my own yard. I missed it with the 4x6 shooter because of depth and with the larger coils they picked up the nail with a jumping VDI that I did not dig. So I would have to go with the 5.3 Eclipse as my second coil.

I agree with these folks about a smaller coil. If I could get only one extra coil, I'd go for the smallest I could find because soon you WILL be in some major trashy sites. I've never used the White's small coils but I have a 5" Excelerator DD and is works miracles in some really junky places. It has decent depth and ID's fine. I believe it's also less expensive then the White's.

the 10" Double-D for open areas with a lower percentage of targets, and the "general purpose" 5.3 Eclipse. By "general purpose" I am referring to a great coil that can be mounted and used for 75%-95% of the coil hunting you're apt to do. This 6

Go for the 6x9 DD coil. It is an awesome addition and the target seperation is great and will cover more area and go deeper than your 4x6 DD.

jcooking in refering to the 6x9 you are refering to the 6x10 right? HH Dennis in Idaho

Yes my mistake, the 6x10 DD coil is what I was referring to.

I really like my 6 X 10 DD, its my first choice out of the truck at every site I roll up on............

Decisions like this are always a bit difficult as none of the coils listed could be called "BAD". From what I've posted before and the opinions of several others, give serious thought to the 5.3 because, as mentionedl, it does well in trash and serves quite well as a general use coil also.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I'm going to go with the 5.3 for now since I need a smaller coil, and it seems to be a good all-around coil.

I too have "gone small" with my second coil. I reccntly picked up a 6" Excelerator EQ2 and it is amazing!!!! I love smaller DD coils for their target separation and this coil also has some depth abilities as well. I think I may also ditch the eclipse 950 for the new 10"d2..........

I also got a MXT 300 just before Xmas with it I bought a 5.3 both great coils. The 12" a bit heavy but great coverage.
A couple months ago a 6x10DD I very rarely take it off. I agree with H/B Bob it's always my first choice & I'm also a
newbie
