WHAT WOULD BE YOUR CHOICE OF WEAPON

For relic detecting with a Whites detector, MXT would be the better choice at least I feel it is.

HH, Paul (Ca)

I'll go with Old California.
The MXT is probably going to "shine bright" as a
Relic hunting machine for a long time, at least until Whites comes out with
a newer and better detector. Hard to imagine that they can
improve on it though.
I bought mine used, a three year old machine at the time,
and never regretted it. The learning curve. It's an excellent
turn and go machine. You still have to go over the VHS/DVD
a couple of times with your detector in hand and turned on. The manual
is decent.

Here is a website you might find useful. Just cut and paste and visit the site.

Yeah, MXT is my choice of relic machine as well. Only improvement that would make me sell mine and get a new one, would be if they found a way to lighten new ones. Oh, and backlighting would be a real good idea for when hunting in heavily clouded weather or at dusk.

That was a reasonable question and I was hoping to see more responses on this. Since this is the Whites forum maybe not many use their Whites for relic hunting?? I think my XL Pro would be more than capable as I always find deep iron targets while coin hunting, especially in the SAT mode.
What are your priorities/battle plan when relic hunting. Do you use two detectors or one for the same job. What I mean...example... if,you are trying to locate a spot that you have researched... Do you use a certain machine/coil combo to locate the spot and once located do you swap to a different machine/coil to begin your hunting for targets?? Of course, I am sure many already know to go directly to a spot/site and begin their hunt for targets.
Do you think certain White detectors, current or discontinued are better suited for this??
Do you find other brands better accomplished for this or maybe as a partner for your Whites??
HH,
John

[size=medium]I think the 5900 is a good pick, as long as you qualify which 5900 and, in my opinion, that would have top be the last version ... the 5900 Di Pro SL with the CB (Composite Board) circuitry.

I used to use that as my top-end performer until spring of 1994 with the XLT was released. I immediately switched over due to the lighter weight and better balance.

Today, depending upon the definition of "relic hunting" (and it does vary), I would want an XL Pro AND either a modified Classic III SL or modified IDX Pro (depending upon whether TID was important or not) and I wouldn't turn my nose up at an XLT. But that's because I feel I know the XLT well enough.

Yes, the MXT has a "Relic" mode, but that's not big deal, and I favor the lower operating frequencies of the XLT, XL Pro, Classic III SL and IDX Pro for better all-around performance. Both ground handling and target responsiveness.

I know from reading the posts that the MXT is leading for the detector of choice..But..Is the MXT really the right frequency for Relic hunting ???

Yes, The higher frequency is the better choice for relic detecting, look at the Tejon, T-2, Compass Goldscanner and several others with a higher kHz.

Any serious relic hunter will agree :)

Any serious relic hunter, as I have been for many years, is gonna tell you he has more than one detector. My first choice would be the XLT for its raw power, and its frequency of 6.59 khz covers all the bases, from iron to brass to silver etc. My second choice would be the MXT for its raw power and its higher frequency of 13 khz, to get any small targets, deeper small brass (buttons). Another asset of the MXT is its capabilities in challenging soil conditions, and its "Lock' ground balance feature. These 2 detectors compliment one another very well, and will give your best opportunity for success in the relic world...in my opinion.

I do just that, use a DFX with a super 12 and hunt in relic mode. Once I locate a decent area that shows potential I will finish out the day with the DFX and return with it and a different detector and swap back and forth. It is a killer combo.

In the all metal mode the XL PRO is a very deep detector.
For Relic hunting it is a very good hunter.
Many coils for this monster 3X4 to 25inch with he 25 inch coil this detector will go to China and that is deeeeeeep.
