What was I thinklng of ?

As I was working my way down this barren beach. I started to wonder what was I thinking of back in 1973 when my Uncle wanted me to get a M.D, and I didn't. Must have been lots of Treasure back then. Than it all came back to me. What I was thinking about back then.

Yep, I truly understand. I could have been a doctor or lawyer etc.

For sure...just imagine what we missed not getting into this sport in the early days. ...:sadwalk: Oh well, hunt twice as hard for twice as long to make up for it I guess!

In the 60's I was at the beach almost every day of every summer (parents were teachers-we camped). I was a surface collector and walked the beach every day. Never saw an MD back then. If I would have known of any-I would not have been able to afford one.
But-I should have made a sifter. I dug in the sand every day. 1 silver coin and I would have never stopped.......

Dirt digger since '83 with a Whites. Never though much about beach MDing at that time. I had the mistaken idea from -reading, talking with some beach MD folks and watching that they were after freah clad drops with the stray silver coin or occasional jewelry. I knew that old material would be exposed after storms-so that was the only time I went. Found plenty of clad-no silver. Guy I went with found 1 silver merc and a worn copper from a ship wreck. 10 hrs on the beach that day. I foolishly used a disc that eliminated any possible gold (I know!) No scoop-so I was pretty discouraged with that (no PP in those days) Each target was trying.
I knew targets would be in shallow water-but I couldn't afford a water MD.

No internet. mostly a loner. And I (still) live 2 hrs from the nearest beach. So I just stayed with the dirt.

So I hear you. I blew it in SO many ways regarding the beach. At least I had a good time MDing inland. To add one more injury: I would drive to the beach -even had a Cherokee & beach pass for a while-80-120 x each year to fish for stripers-never even brought my MD. Thats how I ended up at coin beach 2x with the stumps exposed and down to the clay with no MD.
By that time-I knew I was.........

I never knew about metal detectors until the early 1980's when I moved to PCB, Fl and I just thought it was something old guys did that had nothing else to do on their vacations. Then it was late 2007 when I bought one. You win some, you lose some and that's life. It's a great hobby and it's opened so many doors to learning about other hobbies and history and even tho I don't get to detect near as much as I want to, it gives me that sense of awe I had as a child when I find a good target and then research the history on it. History is much more personal when you can relate to it.

Me too, if I had only known. Do to my job I travelled all over the world for thirty + years and spent a lot of time doing nothing when I could have been metal detecting some of the most beautiful beaches.
With reference to Muggsc comments about being a doctor, there were only three things that kept me out of medical school, ......... grades 10, 11, 12 other than that I would be one now..

Let's invent a time machine and go back before detectors. Of course we would bring along the best of today's technology with us. Just think what we would find!

1973. Can I remember back that far? Spent 76 days out of the first four month of that year submerged in an area where we were less than welcome. Missed a trip to Halifax N.S. as I was on temporary assignment to another submarine.

Metal Detecting was something that I had heard about but had no real knowledge. With a Wife and Two Sons there was not sufficient income on a Sailors Pay to purchase a detector if I had known what to buy. Found the subject interesting but did not know anyone who detected and back then there was NO Metal Detecting Forums for one to gain knowledge.

Fast forward a lot of years to 2012. Brother-In-Law introduced me to detecting. Talk about being hooked.

Love the hobby and like most wish that I had started much sooner. I love the outdoors so detecting is right up my alley.

Yeah I know some of you guys were not yet born and some of you were still chasing the young ladies. I chased one till she caught me in 1964. Best move I ever made was to marry that young lady.

It hurts tro think about it. I grew up surrounded by cellar holes going back to the late 1700's. Swam in swimming holes that had been in use for over 100 years. The beaches of a nearby lake had revolutionary war canon balls show up after storms. When I discover the hobby many decades later I'm in the middly of one of the most heavily detected areas and beaches around. But still, you gotta try!

BTW my lady chased me down and drug me home. She proposed to me!
