What vdi # do you find gold at rings or nuggets

I have only found one gold ring in over a year, & was wondering what I am doing wrong. I dig lots of junk that ring in at 42-47 I also dig a lot around 22-30 but find nothing but tabs. I use my ring to try to find out if there is a different sound but it always jumps around & when the trigger is forward it sounds like foil, cracking & popping.

Am I doing something wrong ? what do you do.

First ley me said you probably won't miss any silver rings because they will be in the upper coin range, mostly penny - dime.

Gold rings will be all over the scale because of size, shape, and type of gold. My smallest was a VDI 8 and my biggest was a very large 57. Most men

First of all do you dig all pulltab targets? If you don't you have probably been missing the gold. I have found alot of gold rings by digging all pulltabs. I have also dug alot of pulltabs, but thats just the trade off. I have also picked up gold rings in the nickle range and in the 12 VDI range. I have not hunted for nuggets so I can't help you there. Good luck. HH Dennis in Idaho

It seems that you are limiting your gold range too much if you start at VDI 22 and stop at 30. Again, 42-47 VDI is a pretty small window as well. I think Rob pretty well hit it on the head with most lost gold rings probably VDI at less than +22.............95%, I don't know about that, but I would safely say over half of the gold rings lost would be small ones for many reasons. Nancy has found gold rings as low as VDI 8, I think, and I have found lunker class rings as high as VDI 65 in the ground. Out of the ground, it VDI'd lower, in the low 50's I believe. Rings will vary in tone depending on how it is sitting in the ground and how rough the surface of the ring is. Class rings tend to sound very trashy because of all of the different angles to scatter the signal. Wedding bands on the other hand usually give a nice smooth "round" sound.

There is an old adage in this hobby that says it all. To find it all, you must dig it all. It couldn't be more true for gold ring hunting.

Hey y'all veteran gold ring finders , would you say it's mostly true that a gold ring will not bounce vdi's too much and that upon crossing the

signal 90 degrees to the original scan, that the vdi numbers will be pretty close ? Thank you for your insights ! Argentium.

I don't know about that, but I would safely say over half of the gold rings lost would be small ones for many reasons. I think it's because women were more jewelry (rings) and their rings are smaller. I'll tone down the 95% and say the majority of my rings. Rob

From my experience when I am lucky enough to come across a gold ring, and if it is laying mostly flat, the VDI locks in right around the 17 - 20 range. It is a solid reading on the cross sweep and VDI does not dramatically jump at all, if at all. At most it is within the range of a nickle. And everytime I dig that nickel and it ends up golden, it is a very nice, unexpected suprise....

Rings on edge do what all signals on edge do, jump and whisper, and sound good in one direction and not the other and make me wonder. I dig'em anyway.

Cheers,
