What to do with it all??

As a 70 year old who is unable to get out and hunt any longer I am curious and would like some thoughts from fellow detectors...Off and on since 1970's I have found over 100 gold and silver rings and pieces of jewelry and well over 1500 silver coins. For close to a year I was able to find a lot of keepers with my E trac which months later had to sell due to illness. So, my question is what what would you do if you were me with all of this silver and gold found over the years. If I die it will go to some undeserving relative that didn't spend one minute on their knees digging in the dirt and mud and I hate to sell all my years of fun and hard work....WHAT WOULD YOU DO ??

I'd sell it and buy one gold or silver coin of high value and have it made into a necklace and I'd wear it to my funeral.

If you really want to part with it, sell it and pick up several entry level detectors and introduce some deserving kids to the hobby. May even help to keep a few out of trouble by giving them a new interest.

That's quite a collection ... congratulations by the way!! I am new to this and have fallen in love with it. I love the old coins and historical relics and the stories behind them. It would be great if you could write about your finds over the years and any special memories attached to them with lots of pictures. Also, if you are concerned about who will inherit your treasures, donate them to someone who you think will really benefit or appreciate them or sell them and do something worthwhile with the money such as a charity or historical society or whatever you deem important. Just some quick brainstorming. Thanks for sharing and hope you come up with something that makes you happy.

well I am leaving all to my son when i pass someday, do you have anyone in your family that you cherish a lot and you would want them to have it? if so put it in your will!!!! If not then you better sell it and have fun with the money while your alive or your family will spend it for you!

Herb,

Maybe......leave them 1 nice ring to remember you by(hopefully). The rest...sell it....and do something you truly enjoy! Vacation(metal detecting vacation even better) new Tv, new clothes, donate some to Whites museum(or others).....WHATEVER makes YOU happy! Do something soon as WE all "tend" to take life for granted. Everyday (and hunt) should be treasured and enjoyed.

You dug them and you earned them!

AAARRRRRGGGGHHH!! Bury it me bucko!! Different amounts in different paces.

The thing about it is that I still love to get it all out and just look at all the shiny precious metal that I have found buried in the earth.

Keep it! Enjoy it! and maybe even post some somewhat detailed pics of your finds.....I sure we would love to see them! I know I would.

We thought you were talking about....."someday", when you were physically not here. That hopefully wont be anytime soon and we enjoy you on this forum so dont go anywhere!......except outside to hunt some more goodies!

What a nice big pile of gold and silver. Bet you had a blast having that many awesome finds. I have an idea. Come to my town and bury it piece by piece in local parks for me to find :beers:

It is yours. Myself I sell a little gold at times but once the silver coins are sold they are melted never to be seen again. I do have children that understand my feelings so they will wind up with my finds. Weight it out so you will know exactly what you have and if you decide to sell all or part let some of your fellow detectorist bid on it. Like I said it is yours. Not a bad problem to have. But I am sure I speak for the people here hoping you will get to feeling better and add to your collection. And a great collection you have. Thanks for posting. HH :minelab:

How about a donation to the Wounded Warriors project or the Animal Humane Society?

I'll send you my address and you can send it to me and I'll see it goes some;)where that it will be appreciated.

Unless you like looking at it..Sell it and treat yourself to something you really want and just never bought for one reason or another.. enjoy my friend..You deserve it.

Herb,
I dont know you but i do face a health issue that will surely end my detecting before i am near ready. I have a different idea that may give you piece and still enjoy the items til you die. If i were in your situation and had no wherre for it to go I think I would find a very very close and dear friend and make arrangements with him and have it in your will so family could not argue. I would have this friend take all the items except maybe one for him or herself to remember you by and I have them travel around where you would like and re locate the items back like you found them for the next generation to find and enjoy after they put out the effort to learn and dig the treasures. give them back to the grounds from where they came to you from. I know its wierd but i know the feeling i and you have when you uncover a nice old silver coin or even a rare gold ring and you could pass that on.

Just a thought

Well Herb ... whatever you decide to do with the finds is up to you.
The most important thing is that you have the memories of all the great times you spent in the field digging all those great coins and pieces of jewelry !

Wait gold and silver are way down if you sell them on eBay you will get more than scrap minus fees or deal with a smelter direct I would sell all at once or by piece so they don't melt the coins hate to see old coins melted. I will buy some of the silver coins if you want send me a pm and I will get back to you

Personally I would sell it all and do something special you have always wanted to do or thought about doing.
Items that might have historical significance I would donate to your local Historical Society.
Best of luck to you.

I like this idea.It doesn't even require much, they could just "seed" a few of your favorite spots for others.

Herb, I actually though about the same thing...Sell it all! Keep one of your favorites for your last hoorah. Take the remaining cash and travel the world, or a place where you have always dreamed of seeing.
Go and enjoy it, you have earned it, good luck.
