What to do about BRASS

After careful research and talking with some of the old timers, I found a very promising site for detecting. The site is an old hot springs that was used from 1850 to around the mid 1950's. The spring dried up in the mid 50's after a well was drilled some miles down stream. Up until that time is was used regularly by locals as well as travelers passing through the area. The site is located 50 feet from the Oregon Trail, making it one of the older gathering spots in the area.Sounds good right? After getting permission from the current owner I started to hunt the spot using a careful grid pattern. What did I find; brass, brass and more brass. I pulled out several ponds of empty and live shell casings. Using Hi-pro with no modifications and the standard DD coil, I hit brass ranging from 5-25 for small shells like .22 cal all the way up to the 70's for large casings like 45-70. Shot gun shell bases and medium caliber shells have VDI's ranging between 25 and 70. Occasionally I would get a good VDI in the 80's only to find my machine was reading shallow brass in conjunction with a deeper iron target. My question is, what should I do about the brass? Should I take a month and clean the area, about 30 meters square, of all the brass? Is there a way to cancel out the brass? I don't want to give up on the site as I am confident it will render some great finds. I honestly think it could fill the bed of my pick-up with all of the shell casings.:rage:
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

It sounds like a great place place to hunt Nathan and also it sounds like it has not been hunted as of late. With the history you state, it sounds like some old coins and other goodies might be mixed with or under the brass. I don't know what to suggest other than it might be best to dig the brass and trash in hopes of getting what is under them. You do have the option to notch out the brass but I don't think that would be smart option. I would be tempted to clean out a likely good spot maybe 20X20 feet for a test to see if it would be worth your while to spend more time in "brassland"

Then dig some more...

Sounds like you might want to take some thing and scrape the top few inches off then detect it. It might very well pay to do so. Yazoo

yep if it is a good site as you say it will be worth it to clean it out section by section and keep the brass and recycle it at least you will get some money back
