I'd go with the 1236......that's an excellent unit not just to start out with, but experienced detectorists love it too. I'm looking for one myself 
I recommended one to a buddy who was just starting out, & he was debating between the same 2 units. He really loved the 1236x-2. He traded up for a Coinstrike, but now really misses the 1236 as the C$ takes alot more patience & some just can't take to it.....
