Help...

my partner found a ring on top of the ground in the park over the weekend while we were metal detecting..we don't know what it is made of....it's silver color with a (fake) diamond solitaire......it has NO writing in it...no 936 sterling, no 14kt,etc.....anyone know what marks are on a platinum ring? i can't bend it with my fingers so its not aluminum...what could it be made of?

im assuming its fake...tho it is nice and fits on my ring finger...lol

she found two darts buried also....i found a dime within 30 seconds on the sand playground...found about 15 cents then her Eldorado broke down so i let her use my ACE...that's when SHE found all the cool stuff out on the soccer field...

i usually find more stuff looking on top of the ground than i do with the metal detector...especially on club hunts up north when i just give up detecting due to hot rocks when the ACE 250 becomes useless...nothing to do but hunt around visually...i've found some cool stuff in these old railroad camps, etc....

anyway anyone have any guesses on the type of ring this could be?

i'm trying to download pictures but it wouldn't because it is 350kb instead of 120kb which is the max allowed....tried 3 times...i will keep trying thanks...

A platinum ring is marked "PLAT". You can see an example in the photo in the post by Goldringer below. Although that one is 18K AND Platinum, so it's marked 18K/PLAT

Is this one of those secondary posts? If it's about the 18k/plat diana ring then maybe it makes sense. Otherwise, we need a pic.

Just asking but you've got me real confused,

BDA:cool:

Of course I could be going blind

nah not blind...i downloaded the pictures to my laptop but i can't get them on to my post...

what am i doing wrong...i click upload photo, then browse and go to where the picture is stored on my laptop, and then upload, and it says it is too big....350kb when 120kb is the limit...i need to resize it somehow...

i gotta figure this out.

ok, i think i got it...i resized them all in microsoft publisher...now they are like 21kb....yay...

lets see if this works......

Okay, serious now, no markings at all eh? How much does it weigh compared to gold or silver of comparable size? Highly unusual to find a plat ring with a CZ. No oxidation as would be typical for silver, might be a very recent drop. Possibly SS or even chrome moly.
More than that I can't say from the pics. If you are really serious about it take a walk down to your local custom jeweller and have it checked out. If in your gut you feel that would be a waste of money then it is probably just that, a fake ring.
Very interesting total nut by the way, including the CO2 cannister.

Cheers,

Did you test the stone with a diamond tester? The thickness of the band is typical of the way they are making Platinum Diamond Rings these days. Platinum as Mike said is usually marked "Plat" but maybe the markings have worn off. Also Platinum rings are fairly heavy for thier size. Does your ring seem light or heavy for it's size? Personally if I didn't have the equipment to test the ring myself I would take it to a jeweler and at least have the stone tested.

ok, it does have a little bit of heft to it...like i said it isnt thin enough metal that i can bend it together with my fingers...

and what are the odds it could be a REAL anything???

nope no marks inside.......but doesn't seem to be cheap metal either...i only buy the real sterling or gold so i have no clue what else is even out there..

Have you ever taken something unidentified to the jeweler and been embarrassed if it is a 'piece of crap?' just curious...lol

thanks for the input..

If it is plat it will certainly have heft, even a ladies ring like that. The stone doesn't show much fire in the pic but it could just be dirt or the angle of the shot. You've got a real wild card there, but don't you want to know for sure? My first ring was the one below and I waited 3 months to get a diamond tester before I knew for sure.
I still like the ring even though it is a CZ in an old style silver setting.

It's like the old Wide, World of Sports intro - The thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. Either way you still have a ring and the jeweller doesn't really care one way or the other, it's his job.
You could always try a pawn shop as they usually have a diamond tester.

Good Luck,
