What should I do?

Here in town we have a baseball stadium that has been in use since the mid 1930's. It was the high school baseball stadium and until about 10 years ago also hosted the high school football team. So it's gotten a lot of use over the years and as far as I know no one has ever been in there with a detector. Problem: It's kept locked up except when in use and last summer when I asked Parks and Rec for permission to go in there, I was denied. The stadium is currently being renovated and last week they stripped the sod off the infield (along with the pull tabs and foil candy wrappers).

There is a 'renovation committee' that is charged with raising donations for the renovation and over the weekend I talked to one of the guys on the committee and he told me to just jump the wall (a stone wall surrounds the place, about 5 feet tall). He said kids climb the wall and go in there all the time. I drove past the place that afternoon as I considered that and as I watched I saw 6 (3 couples) of 20 somethings go over the wall. I gotta tell you guys that I am seriously considering doing just that. any thoughts on the subject?

Not a good idea to jump the wall, if you have been refused permission and you take it on your self to detect on the
"
baseball field you could be charged with trespass and criminal damage." Think about it " :ban:

I agree with leslie and honestly why even ask, you know you shouldnt just by asking. Move on.

I would negotiate a letter of permission with a donation towards the project. It's a win-win for everyone, however, you have the potential to really come out ahead if no one has hunted the area before and the sod has been stripped. I have had the chance on several occasions to hunt such areas and the large cents and silver were plentiful. :)

DONT jump!!!!!! Think about who
is the supervisor /boss of the parks dept.
i got the ok from 2 of the 3 commisioners
in my county to :detecting: a few places i wasnt sure
i culd get into i got the ok in WRITING and i take it with me ..

JUST DONT JUMP !!!!!

Make sure you tell them you will take care of all the trash-like broken bottles with screwcaps on them that could cut people. Let their imaginations work for you.

[size=large]if you can't afford the time/ fine, don't do the crime. since they're stripping then maybe now they'll let ya in since you won't be diggin their
nice grassy field. ask again. this time find the higher up.

Yeah, you guys are right and I kinew it but Dang...the temptation! Maybe I'll go back to Parks and Rec and talk to them directly again. Thanks for the input everyone.

Make sure you have that guys name and phone number on you and jump the fence. He gave you permission. Now you have a contact that's in a position to grant permission - which is what he did. You will be the only one with permission to be in there if the cops come down there. Then it will be all yours.

Find out where they are taking the Dirt they are clearing off. Find that Pile of dirt and have a GREAT time. Do not forget your rake to rake the pile of dirt down.
Now you don't have to worry about getting permission, or getting busted for Trespassing.

Read the code of ethics for our hobby and move on as you have been denied unless you have another avenue to pursue relative permission...

I have a similar dilemma. I know where a huge gold ring with multiple diamonds, was lost some 20-30+ years ago in fresh water. It was in a controlled area because it was inside one of those fishing barges,,,you know, the kind where you all sit around inside a square, covered barge, drinks and food sold, etc. The lake being a Corps Engineers lake, the metal detecting rules are rediculious, plus the lake level now has the access to the parks closed off. Thing is, the low level most likely has this place either dry, or in wading level hunting condition. See my scenario? You maybe have an area of 50' x 50', and an obvious landmark pointing to that spot where the now extinct barge sat when in operation. It is just very tempting to "just that fence" with the low level, so to speak, forget the MDing BS, and see if that spot is dry enough for a fast hunt. It is certainly possible that it was discovered I guess, but I hightly doubt it for some reason. Not many people know the old guy let it slip off in the first place at this point in history, folklore really, but I know it is a fact. Hmmmmmmmmm. It's so close too. martin

The owner's of Crystal Lake had a problem with people trespassing on their land and metal detecting and now it's closed to everybody. It had already been closed and people kept going out there without permission. I had a church member ask the owner's manager for permission and vouch for me, but to no avail. If you get caught, we're all guilty, whether we did anything or not. I was tempted one time myself, but it's not worth the hassle and my reputation is worth more than silver or gold.
Ask that person's boss. One monkey don't stop no show...Good luck and Happy Ethical Hunting.

I see that most are replying for you to stay out. I understand their view completely. But I have waited years for property owners to sell. die or move away so I can re ask for permission to hunt their property. The guy on the committee said you can hunt it so why not? It may be better to ask for a key though? At a couple of schools I hunt I have ran into the grounds keepers. They tell me just don't tear the place up and I can hunt. Well that's good enough for me. I see no reason to go in front of the school board or Superintendent and ask again only to be shot down. Now if asked I can say Tom or Mike said it was OK. I recently got permission to hunt a 100 year old property. I asked the woman about the lot next door. She said that that house was just as old but got torn down years ago. She said that she knew the guy and he wouldn't mind me hunting the lots. That is good enough for me. Now if asked I can say Carolyn said it was OK. So now guys am I wrong in thinking this way?

JUMP!! If it is stripped and not speciffically posted no tresspassing do it..
I would do it on a Sunday morning. Maybe start the previouse Saturday evening.
Make sure you have the comitty members name and cell phone number if any1 does show up.

Have you ever been in jail? can you afford the cost of lawyer?,afford court surcharge and fees? ,afford your name in local paper?, Like having a criminal record? If you can answer yes to this go for it!.But then again think about it is it worth it? for some coins and maybe a ring or two etc.And your answer will be a BIG NO! there are other places to go detecting. And we as a whole don't need another slap in our faces and our hobby and another bad rap Just my opinion...
