My parents did a lot of metal detecting years ago. Actually started the trend around here, [Western Wisconsin] of going out chest deep in the water and they found coffee cans full of gold and silver items. They used 5000 and 6000 series Whites and I still have them. I want to buy two new units for my wife and I and we want to really get ionto this hobby in a big way. What should we buy. I want a very very good unit, it's just that all of them I read about say they are the best. I will only buy a White. Is the spectra V3 the best. We will be using them on land and water.Any info will help

Although the V3 is right up there at the top of the line, I would not advise taking it in the water, especially chest deep. The V3 is not waterproof and one oops could be a disaster. White's does make very good waterproof detectors designed to do what you are wanting to do and they can be checked out at www.whiteselectronics.com The V3 would be a great choice for land hunting though.

We live in Eau claire. I have wanted to get into this for a long time, but have been way to busy at work over the last decade. The time is right and I want to get into this big time. You can not believe what my parents did back in the early 70's and the amount of things they found. They had coffee cans full of gold bands. Did some trading, but amast a collection of class rings from every year going back to the early 1900's. I guess this is a long answer to a short question. I'm Jerry green and cell is 715-563-4165. If you ever feel like chatting feel free to call.

If you type your zip code in the White's dealer locator you will find 7 dealers within driving distance of you. You can try various detectors and get first hand advise on what might be best for your kind of hunting.

Ah, the 70's, fewer clad, no zinc pennies, more silver, virgin sites and less competition. Rob

I live by Hillsboro Wisconsin. About an hour and a half or so South of you. Been metal detecting for a few years now and have yet to see anyone else Metal detecting around here. Will give a a call sometime here on a weekend. V3's are great detectors. I've had 5 different brands before settling on a DFX before this one. This is the best.

I'll certainly second that comment. Get a Whites PI PRO, or dual field, or perhaps a Minelab Excalibur for beach/water work. The Spectra V3i is probably the most advanced land detector available today (Fisher, Minelab, Garrett, etc., owners might disagree)...

Finds are 20% the detector's capability, 40% your knowledge and experience with your machine, 20% perseverance and determination, and 20% luck. It takes 'em all.
