I think I get a bit more depth when I run in manual sensitivity instead of auto. I buried a dime in my test garden at a depth where my E-trac started to bonk on auto. I switched to the exact same sensitivity level in manual and got a good repeating signal again.
What Dan says is true. I have hit iffy targets running in auto+3, toggled over to manual sens and it improved the signal. HOWEVER, as Ray says, "if you are at a trashy site you may get better depth with sens backed off to near the auto plus 3 reading."
I have found auto+3 to be working very satisfactorily, and there are few sites that I am on that are clean enough to run high manual sens. (Just FYI, I ran high manual sens on my Explorer, so I'm not afraid of high sens).
But, at least for me there is another part to this equation which I think is that
depth is not everything! Accurate ID (or good sounds from good targets) is more important than raw depth. Ideally you want depth and accurate ID. I feel most higher end machines with similar sized coils will get the same depth on a hunk-o-metal. The question is when you hear the signal, will you dig? If you have a big shovel and dig everything, this is not an issue, but if you're in a manicured park that dates back to the 1870s with a Lesche and a park maintenance person hovering,
choosing which deep signals to dig is of great importance.
