What really are the differences...?

Tired Rooster

I'm sorry if this is a rather dumb question. But I am very curious. I have a Sov. GT, which unfortunately is out of production of course. My question is...what are the real differences between the Sov. GT and the Excalibur? Other than the obvious......underwater/water proof vs. not. I know little about the Excalibur......are they very similar machines beyond the water proofing? Can the Excalibur perform well on land? Thank you so much in advance for your answers.

I'm sure others will chime in with more information than I can provide, but my understanding is that the Excalibur and the Sovereign line use the exact same technology... BBS.
They have the same language.I am not sure about the controls on the Excalibur, but suspect it has volume, disc., all metal, threshold, but not sure if it has notch, iron mask, or tracking ground balance though.
Other than being waterproof and not being able to use an ID meter on it like the Sovereign, I think they are very much alike.
You could use it on land, but without the meter, you are somewhat handycapped especially on the deeper, older items like coins..not to mention the difference in price when the Sovereign was still in production.

Well said Felix. The Excalibur is one of the best water detectors you can buy.Even though the Excalibur has different tones to help with target ID it doesn't have a Visual aid such as a meter. If you are going to work in water go with the Excal, you'll be very happy with this choice. For park hunting on land the Sovereign GT would be an excellent choice. The Sovereign GT is still being sold as a new detector at bargain prices, with a full warranty from a lot of dealers. The Sovereign still has a large coil selection and is my first choice for searching hunted out old parks for both gold and silver.Hope this helps.HH Ron

The Sov has a little more tweaking ability and depth, You can use high dollar headphones on the Sov and can change coils. There are several coils made for the Sov.... which if you know how you can put on the Xcal since both machines are BBS. The Xcal has fixed coil and headphones. The Xcal is a little heavier even a straight shaft that you have to make or buy. You can adjust the tones inside the box of the Sov. You only get 1 year warranty on the Xcal and they are a little more fragile. You can get a meter and i believe still find an inline probe for the Sov.
