WHat readings..

Ok, so in a few days I'll have a GB pro Dp in hand. I've been looking and can not say I've found what all the likely targets will read.
Saq 1$
sba 1$
wash .25
roosvelt .10
Nickle
pennies
Is there a sticky for this or does anybody know them all ?

Jim --

Quarters are mid to upper 80s...
Roosevelt dimes are 83/84
Nickels are 58
Memorial Pennies (copper -- pre '82) are 83
Wheat Pennies can vary a bit...but usually around 83
Zinc Pennies mid to upper 70s...as low as 74, as high as 78.

Don't know the Sacagawea and SBA dollar VDIs...

The VDI is very accurate. Just today, I hit an 83/84 signal, at 2-3". I dug a small hole, stuck in my pinpointer, removed a bit more dirt, and pulled out....a ZINC. I thought "that's not right..." I threw it in my pouch, put the dirt back in the hole, but before I left, I scanned the hole just to be sure, as that VDI just did not make sense for a zinc. Hit 83/84 again. A-HA!! Took the dirt back out, and pulled a dime out. Scanned again -- 83/84 -- pulled out a quarter and a dime that were "stuck" together -- the dime on top of the quarter. Scanned again -- 77, pulled out two more zincs.

That's how accurate the VDI is on this machine -- it's even good at depth, 7-8".

Clas Dollar coins will hit as a clad quarter 87 - 88 (the ones I've found have so far).

Some of my nickel finds have been 55 - 61, this depends on the way the coin is in the ground, but most have been 56 - 59.

Dimes -- 82 - 84

Copper pennies -- 79 - 83

Zinc pennies -- 71 - 78

IH pennies -- 77 - 80

Quarters -- 84 - 88, again, this depends on the way the coin lays in the ground.

Silver coins will be 1 point over the norm, ie, silver quarter should read 88 - 89.

Pocket spills will be odd numbers and jump about.

A quarter under a dime will read high, at 88 - 89, this is also true if the dime is a penny instead.

G2 follows the same line that bh said

Who me ??

There is no sticky and good post

exact, 100% VDI readings to make a dig / no-dig decision. On most of the early-day Target ID models, most of which were using an analog circuitry and a needle display, you would see a 'zone' or 'section' of the display area that had the words, Foil, Nickel, Pull Tab, Penny, Dime, Quarter, etc. many would just consider a needle reading anywhere within the length of the spelling of the word to be a possible identified target.

There were differences in detector design during that era where some makers used a free-floating needle design, and others had a segmented system whereby the needle might move to a particular spot or segment across the display based upon the processed signal strength or registry. One model I used a bit some 22 years ago had sixteen (16) different positions or segments in that needle display range.

In time, many would learn that certain segment read-outs or even the positioning of a full-floating needle might better display a likely coin. For example, one particular brand was often considered to be quite accurate at identifying a US 5

Thanks Monte. I knew that most coins can vary on how they read and was just trying to get an idea of what falls where.
I do expect to put a lot of time on this machine, weather permitting.

The detector is due today buy end of Day. My complaint with UPS is that's the only time they deliver to me. Tracking says the item is out for delivery at 6:00Am and the will ring my bell around 7-8 pm.

Monte, you honor me, what can I say !

Your vast informative posts always grab my attention, it is from these posts that I have learned so much so quickly. I should also add that Mike Hillis posts on the F5 opened my eyes.

It's people like yourselves that have past on so much information, it has enhanced my awareness on things, and to this point I have put into practice some of the things that you have said. I've even tested a few tips and tricks out just to see, and I can not thank you and others for this information that you so kindly divulge to us all.

The problem with that 'lock-on' mentality was that they were also going to MISS some of the good coins that didn't lock-on just the right spot due to various influences.

As an example, while hunting a plowed field with not a lot of targets with my 6000 Pro XL, I was digging everything about iron. One target locked on around "25" on the analog meter and I thought aluminum, digging the target it was an 1904 Indian Head Penny and close by was also a small nail. The Indian Head Penny, once dug, would lock on just below "Penny" or about "56 - 58" on the 0 - 100 meter scale.

Monte Great post and I love your web site !

Monte I would not rely only on readings as a dig or no dig choice...But in a location that is a gray area for detecting I can work the area to my advantage to dig the larger easily recoverable objects and clear as much as I can before I try looking for all the trash that covers this zone......
NyC says not to dig on baseball fields, football field, manicured lawns.......and the area I am on is the oval inside a track...
Well I want to leave no unsightly blemish while I remove the trash that liters the field. I hope to bring a bucket soon and collect all the pressed in bottle tops that cover this area. I think the center section doubles as a football field and have been staying to the edges where the grass still grows? A real parks dept would close fields that look like this one to regrow the grass...
But you know they blame it on the metal detector users.

ok, I am bumping this post to the top for a while because it has the most complete list of what things read...
Now that the athletic field is getting a bit more sparse on finds. I was able to hunt with the 11" coil.
Though I may put the 5" on for another hunt or two because I did have some trouble yesterday finding the target in a few spots.
Buried cans do drive me crazy. But in 1 or two spots I had nice solid quarter signal but could not get the actual location. I'm thinking there were a few overlapping targets.

Though the saq 1$ definitely come out around 89-90
