hello everyone, ive been doing this great hobby of ours for over 25 years, and tried just about every machine out there. some were good, some were ok, and some just downright sucked! imagine, if you will: the good man who owns the simple to operate, inexpensive machine has a bad day detecting, not finding much and thinks to himself, "hmmm, i think i need a better machine. i know this one well, its paid for itself, but i think im missing stuff." on the other hand, the good man who bought a top shelf, expensive machine says to himself, " i really do like this machine. lots of bells and whistles. a real step up from where i started. too bad its a pain to program. really time consuming. be a heckuva hit if someone stole it. it cost a lot, so that alone makes it superior." ...so now you see. it seems that more is less, and less really is more. many of us have thought these same thoughts many times, only to return to what we know best. what that "best" for you is, i dont know, and i cant tell you whats right for you. you can rest assured, my friend that the metal detector makers already know how we feel about our machines, how often were likely to switch models, how much were willing to pay, etc. i for one believe that there should be no monetary limits on what makes you happy. i will greet a fellow mder with a radio shack model the same way i would a fella with a very expensive unit. but i do think its important to stay as simple as possible. ive never felt the need to buy a 40 dollar digging tool; or spend more than 400 bucks for a detector. personally, id be scared to death to take a higher priced detector out my door! the truth of the matter is, the mid level detectors are finding just as much if not more than the higher priced detectors are. seen it hundreds of times. and pretty much across the board. just my 2 cents, hh,

yeah, tabdog, thats ok my friend, youve made some killer finds with that little machine and quite frankly have done a great job of depleting the arkansas soil of its secrets! i believe the whole message were trying to send is this: its more about the man and the machine than anything else. bravo!

I highly agree...a man with a cheap detector that knows his machine will out hunt a man with a top dollar machine that struggles to understand what it is telling him...I have always been a KISS fan...KEEP IT STUPIDLY SIMPLE....I have considered some of the expensive White's and Minelab machines...I have looked at the high end Tesoros...I think I will stick with my Land Star for a while...It does it's job well, and it is what I know right now...I want a Time Ranger sometime before 2010....But by then, I also plan to move out of SorryExcuse (Syracuse), if not out of the state of NY...I have had it up to here with the money grubbers here in this state...also the Dirty Politics...Some things you just cannot escape though I feel...Anyways, I say you have to swing what your comfortable with...It is a combination of things that make a successful hunt...the research, the brain, the detector, and the location....if any one of these fail, your gonna have a dull to mediocre day of hunting at best....

Agreed, well said! HH regards Nugget.:detecting:

..well fellas, and occasionally ladies too, its very apparent that we all feel strongly on this subject... which is why i moved it from the tesoro forum to here, the responses have been most interesting! i knew this topic would cause good debate, but i also wanted to know how you all felt. ive learned thru everyones posts that there really are no bad machines, or bad people on here, for that matter; but there are such things as having bad days and loyalty to your brands, and disagreements about such.. but thats ok, thats why we are all on here... to talk about these kinds of things. at the end of the day, we are all still involved in this great hobby and hope to find that oh-my-god-you-wont-believe-what-i-just-found coin or relic that will automatically put you in the upper echelons of the hobby! and it can all be done with a bounty hunter, a minelab, a whites, a tesoro, a fisher or any other machine you can think of. [even a compadre!] hahaha, had to input that td, please forgive! [youve done quite well, dont grouse!] ive learned, and hope that you have too, that it really is more about the individual and their machine. and no matter the costs involved- that seems secondary at this point. the better you know your machine, the better you will do. sure, you can throw in all the hidden factors, the abilities of you and the machine, and debate this until the cows come home [that aint gonna happen] but what ive learned from you, and now myself, is that it really is about the man/woman and their machine, and what we know about ourselves and our choice of machines, and have decided to be content with... search on, my brother and hh,

Right now there are 2 basic technologies for metal detection...VLF (Very Low Frequency) and PI (Pulse Induction). I am not going to say that I fully understand either one. What I do understand is that each puts a radio signal into the ground...The pattern of this signal is different from detector to detector...Some are conical with the large end at the coil...some have a more round or straight down type pattern..This signal when it hits a metal object is reflected back to the coil and is interpreted by circuitry in the control box. The box then sends its findings either as an audio response, or a reading on an LCD screen, or both...So, what I am trying to say is all detectors do pretty much the same thing. It is the coils and the electronics that make the difference in depth and discrimination capabilities in any detector.
