what one should I buy?

I Was walking on a boardwalk yesterday, and saw a man digging for goods with his $40 metal detector that he bought at a garage sale. I saw what he had in his hand; coins, old and new and a gold necklace with a charm on it. I was hooked.
But what to get? The little I have read about the Ground Hawk the more it seems to get to the point without all the bells and whistles. What do you suggest? Will this one help me with the little to the Big adventures? Do I need a pin-pointer?

Any help would be great; I want to purchase one asap

Thank you

John

I wrote the original review on the Ground Hawk on metaldetectorreviews.net. It's a great relic machine. But if you're after coins and relics, in my opinion the Xterra 70 can't be beat. I'd take it over any other machine right now, including the Explorer. In my opinion, there is not a finer machine on the market today. Good luck!

Although I do agree with Digger as I too have the 70 but if money is a factor in the equation then the X-T 30 will do you no wrong. Turn it on and away you go, it has a preset GB and pinpoint mode which is what you asked about. I love the display feature on the terra's because it's BIG and very easy to see, the only thing missing is a backlight option which comes with the explorers. The machines themselves are very light and stock coils are waterproof. Power isnt a problem.............4 AA's will last along time and you will have no problem with depth. You will get 2 pre-programmed search patterns and depth and battery level indicators. If money is no option then I would take the 70 hands down as it will give you plenty of room to move in the future. Hope this has helped.
Cheers!

Naturally, since this is the X-Terra forum, you will get a lot of positive comments about the X-Terra. As far as target ID detectors go today, I don't think you can beat them. From the X-30 to the X-50 to the X-70, they all pack a lot of features. Excellent depth of detection, audio tones, notch discrimination, pinpointing mode etc. However, if you are considering a non-metered detector..... one with excellent depth of detection, with manual or fixed GB, variable sensitivity, pinpoint mode and variable discrimination, don't overlook the Minelab Advantage. I've been using them since they were introduced and it never ceases to amaze me. JMHO HH Randy

Owning a X-terra 70, and a 50, and a Minelab sovereign GT,

I would go for the Sov, but as you are a beginner, I would say an X-terra 70 will be better suited for you.

It will compensate for any of the users mistakes

Seems like many of us would recommend the X-terra. If the cost must be kept very low,
the X30 with fixed ground balancing is okay. I had a X50 and in my soil it GBed at the
end of the range leaving me to wonder if it was GBed correctly. I got the X70 and GB
is not a problem. The X70 has several other good features.
