What Mode do you use on your MXT to shoot for coins and why

I am far from an expert, but I have gained quite a bit from this forum. I think it is important to contribute where possible. I'll try and field your question, and perhaps some of the real pros in here can put me back on the path in the places I miss!

If I were in an area that had recently dropped coin, just to cherry pick dimes and better, and was not concerned with potential old deep coins, I would run in relic mode. I would set the gain to 7 or 8, which is more than enough to find shallow coins, and low enough to not sound off on small bits of aluminum and foil. I would run the disc. at about 12:00 o'clock; I think there is a preset there. You could experiment with a dime, and tune it to where it just nulls it out, and then turn it a hair lower.

That said, I would never set mine up that way, because I do not like giving up nickels and gold rings. I like to run my disc. at about 2. After you put some time in with the MXT, you get a feel for when a good sounding hit gives you a good VDI number [say 78] and a depth indication of 4" is really telling you it has found a small chunk of foil that's less than 1" deep. The higher the gain, the more small junk you will find.

Deep coins are a different matter. I have nowhere near the experience with these as I would like, but I have found you need a gain setting in the + side, max if you can get the detector to do it. Threshold setting is more critical here. I like to tune the threshold from quiet to just where you start getting a smooth sound.

Sometimes the only indication of a deep target will be a change in the sound of the threshold. You might hear a break in the hum of the threshold. I have found foil, nickels and wheat cents, and even once got a gold ring this way.

I don't like the coin mode because it is more unstable than relic mode. Prospecting mode could be useful if you are looking for an isolated pocket of metal over a large area, but would not be much fun to seriously search for coins with.

For a simple detector, there is alot to learn on the MXT. I would first get a small coil (5.3 Eclipse works for me, although there are many excellent options), and practice in relic mode. Be prepared to dig some trash, even at VDI levels that indicate coins.

I have picked up about 1000 coins but have been using the coin mode have found one Ring and some small pieces off what might have been on a charm bracelet most of my my finds have been 4" or less .Tyring to find more gold .I realize you have to dig a lot of trash ,was just wondering what mode everyone else was using.I also have a 4x6 and a 6x10 coil Thank for you reply
