Just got my first detector wednesday evening. I tried MDing about 25yrs ago w/my uncle. Boy have the machines changed. Thursday I went out for about an hour and just played around, tried to a feel for it I was confused. So I read and reread the manuel, looked at all the info I could find and tried again today. I went out to an old abandoned farm, a family friend owns. Unfortunately
all around the house the weed were too high. So Iworked around driveway. Tons of trash! Nails, pulltabs, flat cans etc... So I moved to a different area near an old out building. Well eventually I got, what I thought was a good hit, it was registering 79-83 on VDI, and I thought I hit a cache, as good tone was spread out a little. I pinpointed the first spot and got a depeth of 4 inches, so I started digging. Rocky, hard soil. Got down about 4" and hit metal. As I uncovered it I realized it was larger than I thought, and all the good hit were the same thing. I rechecked a few time with MXT and got consistent VDI. But to me it looks like Iron. I couldn't finish, as I already dug at it for an hour. So I covered and marked to return tomrorrow. Also checked in relic mode, locked and unlocked GB, Fiddled with gain, disc, in both C/J and relic. Always got same VDI. I figure its about 10" x 10" it's uneven, not smooth, only found one edge. I don't know if GB was correct as I found tonight that I did it wrong, I tapped it on the ground. I also ddin't check the mineralization, learned about that more tonight also. Anyway looks like iron, VDIs high, with all kind of setting. Any ideas?

Old, very rusty iron (or steel) will give a good signal on any detector. I can't get too technical because I really do not understand how but, trust me, it does. An old beer bottle cap usually gives a pretty good quarter signal.

That being said, it may be trash, it may not be trash. It is probably iron but, until you dig it up you will never know it it is part of an old stove or a cache full of gold pieces.

Let us know what it is. If you do not want to dig it up, let me know the location and I will. I get more dang junk that way but, maybe, someday, who knows.... :partytime:

More fun than just buying a lottery ticket. Actually, probably better odds too.
