What makes the CZ-5 special?

There is something about the CZ-5 Quicksilver I just like. I find it hard to put a finger on what exactly it is, but there is something about it that resonates with me. I can't tell for sure if it is the way it works, or sounds, or looks, but something about it really draws me. Which left me wondering as I didn't feel this way about the CZ-3D.

My CZ-5 needed a new knob. One of the knobs had broken and had been replaced with a temporary radio shack dial. So I called Fisher and spoke to Art, telling him I needed a new knob for my CZ-5. He told me they no longer had parts for the CZ-5, so I said, "how about the CZ-3D?". No problem said Art, I'll send one right out, no charge. And he did. Thank you Fisher!

So my new CZ-3D knob arrived a couple of days later and I happily replaced the radio shack dial. And that is where it dawns on me what makes the CZ-5 seem more special to me. It has that valuable instrument look and feel, part of which is conveyed by the knobs. The CZ-5 has those Bakelite style dials, while the CZ-3D has the modern day plastic dials.

That valuable instrumentation look and feel, combined with the audio and performance makes the CZ-5 Quicksilver seem like a real treasure hunting tool to be used and cherished.

Funny what a dial style can do to something.

Now I'm on a search for a complete set of those original CZ-5 knobs. If you know where I can get one or more of them, give me a shout.

I have had about all the CZ's models and they all are a hair different in one way or another even though some say a CZ IS A CZ. I wish they would have kept the original decals on the CZ-3D as I never liked the new one they gave it as it is to loud for me. But I seem to have bounded with the CZ-3D more than earlier model's. The CZ-5 I had was the one I had the second longest. I always thought the analog's in General were a hair hotter maybe due to the the fact you can raise the sen. in single digit's as apposed to 2 at at a time. One thing for sure all CZ's are great detectors. I hope First Texas keep's the CZ-3D in their line up as it is still a CZ. I was thinking about this the other day,The CZ platform has been around since 92'. I couldn't think of any model from that time that can keep up depth wise to the detector's of today. Don't get me wrong I have an E-trac and it is a great machine,But I can still go back with my CZ-3D and pull deep old coin's that the E-trac missed. I will always have at least one CZ in my line -up!

I used to own an early CZ-5, still own and use a 1266-X. I kept getting zinc readings on my CZ and ignored them as zinc pennies, till one day a friend who also owned one said, if the zinc is 3 inches or deeper, dig them! They ARE indian cents. true to his word, they were!......nge

Hi Mike,

I agree the older CZ knobs are much better, Plus the top portions are more rounded just looks more streamlined.

Thanks to you for bringing this up a while back, Wasn't until I read what you were saying when I realaized what you were referring too.

Have now switched back to the older CZ knobs to the upper portion of my CZ-3D, I like it allot has a much better look and feel to it.

Thanks again,
Paul (Ca)

I remember finding many old Wheats as well that indicated as "zinc cents" with my CZ-5. Some of the 1910s and 1920s cents were more of a bronze alloy than copper so I'm guessing this is why they indicate as such sometimes...
