As bdahunter said, you will get as many different answers as there are detectors, but I'll put my plug in for what works for me. There are more Minelab Excaliburs on the beach than any other machine, at least at every beach I've seen multiple detectors at, and certainly here. Many (including myslef) consider it to be THE beach detecting machine. It's fully submersible (for diving to as deep as 200 feet in you like), is easy to use, and mine has paid for it's $1000 self many times over. There has been much discussion about "build quality" and various features that folks wish they had and what Minelab needs to do to make it better, etc, etc. and I have to agree that I would like to see a few improvements. But mine has been going strong for two years and I haven't had any problems with it. I feel that as long as you take good care of it and don't use it as a pogo stick or a walking crutch and wash it off with fresh water every time you use it that it holds up to normal use pretty well. The bottom line is that they bring home the bacon and are easy and fun to use. I have tried and own a number of other machines but when I head for the beach the only one I want is my Excalibur.
