Hi,
I have a Garmin Oregon 450. Very happy with it, aside from the common complaint that the display could be a little brighter. I hear a lot of people extol the virtues of the 60CSx. I think either would do everything that I use it for. Yes, I have been doing some research on early history of the area and plugging in waypoints (either via Basecamp or Google Earth or ArcGIS).

I have to mention that I recently bought a tablet, the ASUS Transformer, and it is amazing. In Google maps, I tapped an approximate location of a ghost town (in the middle of nowhere, 4wd roads, etc.) and tap 'go' and got turn by turn directions. (No, dummy, turn around and go back to that river bed and drive up it, ). I also bought a little app for it called BackCountry Navigator Pro ($9.99!) and have imported all my waypoints into it as well. It is awesome, gets free beautifully shaded topos from ArcGIS and a number of other sources, as well as openStreetMaps, Aerial Satellite Photos from USGS, etc., and you can change maps on the fly. My tab is WiFi only, so I have to download topo sections for out of network range, easy to do. I had got the car mount for the Garmin Oregon, but had trouble seeing it while driving, so am waiting for the car mount for the tab. Got a case for it so I can throw it in the daypack. I still use the Garmin most when hiking because I always carry extra batteries for it. The tab gets 9 hours on a charge, but nice to have a backup, and it's easy to mark a waypoint for the car... I do a lot of bushwhacking and my usually good sense of direction has failed me a couple of times, resulting in some very long hikes!

Congrats on the GPS, You'll have lots of (safe) fun with it!!

GREAT CHOICE!! I've had mine for a few years now and love it. I did buy the Topo maps for it and that's a plus when your out in the woods. It shows trails, land variations, lake, rivers, Etc. I had the Garmin Rhino and lost satellite receptions in the thick wooded area and burned up batteries fast, BUT NOT the 60 CSx!! I have a lot of targets marked and areas that produced good finds so I know exactly how to get back to them. Even leaves a bread crumb trail to retrace your exact steps back. I know they have newer models out, but I am very satisfied with my 60. User friendly too. Have fun and enjoy it.

For you Droid smartphone folks, try "GeoCam". I am not sure if it is available in the Apple store or not.

Just take a close up picure of anything interesting you find using GeoCam and it will attach GPS data to the picture. Later you can not only look at the picture, but you can choose to see the location where the picture was taken. [sup][/sup]

I am too cheap for GPS...I am part American Indian, so I have good directional sense...

HH,

Garmin Oregon 400, touch screen.

I bought a cell phone with a GPS app. It isn't worth a hoot! Screen is so small it is difficult to read and it shuts off before you get it figured out. Don't rely on it if you have one. Onus

Ive got the Dakota 20,nice and compact and got all I need,a mate just bought the 60csx and is very happy with it,the screen clarity is great Evan in the sun,William that tablet sounds like a great bit of kit. I am going to have a good look at the specks on it and it might just be added to my list, the applications sound reasonable as well not like garmin they cost an arm and a leg, good luck with your new gps Garrett at pro it will serve you well
