What kind of button is this?

I'm sure someone here will chime in with the correct ID, but it looks early navy to me.I would guess civil war era.

THAT BUTTON WAS MADE UP UNTIL 1940 ....I FOUND A POST ONLINE SAYING IN 1941 THE EAGLE WAS CHANGED TO FACE THE OTHER WAY..CAN YOU MAKE OUT ANY WRITING ON THE BACK..IF SO THAT WILL HELP DATE IT BETTER..

HAVE A LITTLE MORE INFO..THAT BUTTON WAS USED FROM 1852-1940..SO CIVIL WAR UP UNTIL WW2..IT IS MODEL NA113..ANCHOR POINT IN FRONT OF LEFT WING..IF IF IT WAS BEHIND THE WING IT WOULD DEFINATELY BE CIVIL WAR..BUT STILL CANT RULE IT OUT..

With the info others have provided, it gives me some thought. It seems this button was made from the Civil War up until WWII. Although the soils around the country can vary a lot and as a result their impact on the preservation of a button, it appears this button has been in the ground from well before WWII and I would guess before 1900. JMHO.

Please show us a good picture of the back. Most military buttons have a backstamp. If yours doesn't, its most likely a fashion button.
