What Is Your Favorite Coil & Why?

Thought it would be fun to hear which coil is your favorite for your Sovereign or Excal and why. I bet there will be some Coin Search coil fans who chime in.

For me of course it's the 12x10. Reason being better seperation, stability, depth, and coverage.

Post your favorite coil and why.

When using my GT I prefer the SunRay S-5 because of its ability to separate targets and its very easy to pin-point with. HH. Matt

I have only used two for my GT and that is the 10" and 8" tornado. I love them both but my favorite would have to go to the smaller tornado due to its seperation abilities.

15" WOT because it covers so much ground and gets deep , and its orange. and its big enuff to ward off attacking dogs, AND it covers farm fields fast, and its light . not color but weight ,

I have the 10" and 8" tornado and am very happy with both.

Hey Gunnar,

have you ever got into that situation where you were attacked? That would be an expensive repair if fluffy bit into your WOT coil lol You might consider carrying something extra special just in case. I need you to protect yourself while you are out in the wild wilderness so you can continue to make your detecting videos.

My SEF 10x12 for my GT. Great target seperation and ground coverage, plus it is deep even on the tiny stuff.

Probably the little joey.......extremely light with good depth and seperation......and brilliant on small stuff.

i like the wot just for those ocasional times when you get that whisper signal and you have a hunch it could be something good....then you dig and rescan, dig and rescan ,dig and rescan all the while that signal starts getting a little loud a little sweeter ,looking at the pit youv just dug and wondering when is this target gonna surrender..... then out comes a 1787 large cent and you realize no other combination in my arsenal could have given me this result... oh ya its also good for warding off mad dogs----thanx gunnar you made my day...thats funny...

I don't have enough experience to answer this trick question. So I have to say my favorite coil is whatever happens to be on the end of my MD :D As long as I can get out and use the tools, I'm happy! I might have a different answer in a year from now though. As for mad dogs - I use something that's a bit faster than a swinging coil - but only when needed.

My favorite coil to learn the Sovereign is the 8 inch coinsearch as the signals are easy to get and hear with this coil, now when you get to learn and know your Sovereign well and want a 8 inch coil then that has to be the Sun Ray S-8 coil as it seems to separate real good but the signals for me seems smaller and could be why it separates so well that I don't need a 5 inch coil and have some great depth too. Now the 10 inch coil that comes on the Elite and GT (tornado coil) seems to be the one I use the most and it is the best 10 inch coil Minelab has ever made and does much better then other coils that size i feel. Now for a bigger coil i have tried the WOT and the S-12 of Sun Rays and feel the S-12 of Sun Rays did much better for me in actual hunts. Haven't tried the 12X10 SEF coil yet and may have to get one and try it, but want to see more people post good about it as a guy around hear got one and the tones for the bigger silver was a low tone, sent it back for another and it nulled on big silver. Don't know if it was 2 bad coils in a row or what, but he got a S-12 and is very happy with it and works great. I do have a 10x12 and a 8X6 SEF and haven't even tried the 10X12 yet, but the 8X6 seems to work OK for my E-Trac. I also tried a 15X12 SEF on the E-Trac and it worked real good and separated real good too, but from experience I see what works good on the Explorer/E-trac and using the same thing on the Sovereign may not work that great.

A 10" coil may be seeing too much mineralized ground in your soil to work well. There are situations (certain mineralized soils) where a smaller coil will get deeper than a larger one. I remember one place I hunt where the 6" coil on my QXT got better depth and better target IDs than the 9.5" stock coil. It also made it run smoother by using the smaller coil there.

I think this is one of the reasons why the 12x10 gets deeper and runs smoother for me than the stock 10" coil. While the 12x10 is larger, it has a much tighter detection field in the left/right perspective and so I feel is seeing less ground matrix as a whole.
