What is this?

This was found in a fire pit along with a couple of horseshoes. The place was near an old stage stop. It appears to be made of copper. The two halves seem to fit together and the top used to have a hinge. The back seems to have brackets that would fit on a belt.
 
Boy ... that's a tough one - any stampings on it ?
Maybe try posting it in a Relic forum.

It looks like a civil war era percussion revolver pouch. If you look on a very popular on line auction site right now there is one listed right now. The one on line is leather but they were also made of metal and some were metal wrapped in leather. I believe yours was never leather covered. Let me know if you agree I'm 99% sure on this have seen several but never found one they are not in my part of the country "Iowa". NICE FIND they are rare.
 
Thanks for the help. It does not show any signs of being covered in leather, It does look like there was a leather strap attached to the back.
