What is this please

Someone might recognize it but it would help if we had other views of the object and some reference to it's size. A picture of it in your hand would give a good indication.

That is an interesting piece and even looks familiar but I am at a loss to even make a guess. A little more information might be helpful in identifying your object. What is the size of the piece, diameter and weight. I see a square hole. How deep is it or does it go all the way through and what does it measure? Are those saw marks on the left side of the piece? Several pictures from different angles/sides can be a big help. Sometimes if its not giving away a secret spot it even helps to know what city and state it was found in. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site and someone might recognize this right off but the more information the better.

This item is cast iron or cast steel. All the highway smudge pots I've seen are made of tin or light weight formed steel. A smudge pot should also have a flat bottom so it does not roll away. I would still like to see more info on this but until I see something different I think taz42o might be close.

Counterweight off railway signal or points tumbler or similar.
Particularly from around underground mine or other light narrow gauge system

It could be a Ball handle from many different machines and the hole is where the lever shank went....more info please ... Woodstock
