What is this old coin token

New member
Found today near edge of a corn field. Very badly pitted copper token with eagle/arrows on one side, wreath on other side. Can't see date. Inside the wreath is letters but can't read them. Same size as a quarter. Does anyone have a clue what it might be. Jabbo, New Jersey.

Hi Jabbo, hard to say as it could be a bunch of somethings, but my first thought was that it is similar to what was called a "Suttler's Token" that was used as trade money by traders that sometimes followed CW Troops as they moved about the country. They usually had an Eagle or some Patriotic Theme on one side and possibly the Trader's Name or it's value on the other.I have one similar that I dug and never did identify it for sure. Each Trader made his own "money" so there would have been many varriations. Whatever it is, it is a good indicator you may have a possible hot spot where troops camped in the area . I would do some research (if you haven't already) and maybe that will turn up some idea of what the token may be. Looks like a goodie to me and I would be heading back to the corn field first chance I got. HH, Charlie

In May I found a 1700"s King George penny there and flat buttons very close to this token. Will go back after frost hits, no corn was planted for many years, full of tall weeds yet. Fisher ID Edge with 8" coil.

Could be a medal not a token possibly navy. Its not in any of the trade token of NJ.

The back side shows a wreath. Is badly pitted can only see the wreath, seems to have some lettering inside. Might be a hard times token from the 1800's.

Looks like a 1837 half cent hard times token to me, nice find

Da Yooper is right. I did a search on the internet for a 1837 hard times half cent token. All visible details on the one I detected match it. Da Yooper thanx for the help on this mystery coin. jabbo
